News from Guatemala
Affiliated student graduates university with social work degree
SofiaThis past March, Sofía Díaz graduated from the Mariano Galvez university with a degree in social work.  She was the first person in her family to get a university degree.  "I feel very happy," she says, "and proud that I have fulfilled one of my goals in life."

It hasn't always been easy working toward this goal.  For the past six years, Sofía has juggled a full-time work schedule at Common Hope and her university studies.  "In the beginning it was hard," she says, "but then I got used to organizing and sticking to a schedule."   Continue reading...

Future nurse Blanca Estrada needs your help
BlancaBlanca Estrada's family was among the group in New Hope that recently earned the title to their land.  In the photo to the left, Blanca is holding her family's new land title.

Blanca wants to be a nurse when she grows up.  However, she currently needs a Lead or Guiding Sponsor, at $30 or $60 per month to support her education.

If you can help guide Blanca to nursing school, please contact Jessie via email or (651) 917-1045.  If you know someone else who can help, use the "forward to a friend" link at the bottom of this email.
From the ravines to the capital
rigoberto Jeff Barnes, strategic planner, had a very memorable conversation at the recent New Hope deed signing ceremony.  That day, Rigoberto Lopez approached him to express his gratitude for the opportunity to earn his land.  Jeff knew Rigoberto from the days when New Hope was built -- Jeff had managed the construction of the village and school, while Rigoberto worked on the crew.

Perhaps because Jeff had seen so much of Rigoberto's journey over the past decade, his words meant a lot more than a simple thank you.  Read more...

Supporters in Action
Thanks to you, Noche de Colores a success
NocheNot only did we meet our fundraising goals, but Noche also proved to be a wonderful time to connect with old and new friends, and our work in Guatemala.  Karla Heeter shared her life-changing relationship with student Walter Burgos, whom she sponsored with her husband, Ron Heeter.  Attendees met Walter through a video that was filmed and produced by Buck Holzemer and Patti Petrich of Buck Holzemer Productions.  The pair also produced four moving video vignettes presented during our needs auction.  Plus, they donated beautiful portraits of students who needed Sponsors, which were hung around the venue for guests to peruse.  At least 24 students were sponsored that evening!

McDonald Remodeling and another anonymous group matched $10,000 for the housing and university scholarship auctions respectively.  With these donations, over $100,000 was raised for education, health care, housing, and university scholarships.  Ticket and Guatemalan market sales increased our total revenue to over $170,000.  Thank you to all who were involved in making this event a success.  To view one of the videos from the event, visit www.commonhope.org.
New donor recognition this year

You Can Help
Sewing groups needed
Common Hope is looking for sewing groups who are interested in making over 1,000 pencil bags for school kids.  Ideally, we need these by the end of September so we can pack and ship them in time for the new school year.

If you are interested in either sewing or collecting the actual supplies that will be packed in the bags, please contact Louise Lundgren via email or (651) 917-0250.
Join a 2009 Vision Team and enjoy great rates on flights to Guatemala
There has never been a cheaper time to travel to Guatemala.  Flights to Guatemala just dropped $150.  A round trip flight in July from Minneapolis to Guatemala City costs only $350.

Spaces are still available in July and September of this year. Book a Vision Team now with Kristin Hunter, Vision Team Coordinator, via email or at (651) 917-0250.
Spanish-speaking teachers needed
Teachers with a proficiency in Spanish are needed from May to October 2009 to volunteer in a pilot teacher training program called Let's Be Ready.  Volunteer commitment is a minimum of three weeks, although longer-term placements are preferred.  Training will be provided.

Read more about the position here.  If interested, contact Louise Lundgren via email or at (651) 917-0250.
Help a child learn the joy of reading
Buenas Noches LunaOur May need of the month is 1,500 children's books in Spanish

In Guatemala, many homes do not have even a single book.  With an average income of $4 per day, families have a hard time paying for food and clothing let alone books and school supplies for their children.

Common Hope has a library at our Antigua and New Hope site where children can choose from shelves full of books, so that they too can learn the joy of reading.  Help us to share books with affiliated students and reach our goal!
