"It's easy to flip to another story in the paper when topics of poverty come up, but the personal experience with Common Hope makes a huge impact."

- Vision Team member

Greetings!

Below are some of the latest updates about students, families, and members of the Common Hope community.  Thank you for all of the good work that you make possible!
News from Guatemala
Loads of supplies arrive at Antigua site
In mid August two containers of donated supplies arrived at the Antigua site.  Weighing a combined total of about 52,000 lbs., each was filled with an estimated $200,000 in school supplies which are already being distributed amongst our programs, including, linens, towels, hygiene items, toys, sewing machines, books, tools, hats/mittens/scarves, blankets, office supplies, work boots, crutches, and dental/medical equipment.

Thanks again to Karen Reichensperger of The MESSAGE Program, who was very instrumental in coordinating the shipment on truck, rail, and ship and getting the supplies through customs in a timely manner.  We are grateful to everyone who had a hand in this major in-kind effort!

A load of office supplies also arrived in mid August from 3M Guatemala, including boxes of tape, post-it notes, and an overhead projector.  The 3M staff toured the Antigua site to learn more about Common Hope's work and were very interested in finding additional ways to get involved and support our work.  Many thanks to 3M Guatemala for your generous donation!
Meet Juergen Aldaier Gudiel Velasquez
Sponsored StudentSeventh grader Juergen is among the best students in his class.  He has worked very hard for his scholarship this past year and is happy to have the opportunity for an education.

Juergen lives 30 minutes from New Hope in the town of Tres Sabanas with his parents, brother, and sister.  They live in a home made of concrete block, roofing steel, and an earthen floor.

If you can provide financial and moral support for Juergen's education, please email or call Jessie in our sponsorship department at (651) 917-1045.

Presentation at Best Buy's WOLF event
The Best Buy Women's Leadership Forum (WOLF) invited Tamalyn Gutierrez, country director of Common Hope, to present at their annual event in Boston, MA on August 20-22.  The event focused on women's leadership, inspiration, and empowerment, and Tamalyn's workshop, The Weight of the World: Women in Guatemala and How We Can Shoulder Their Burdens, was inspired by her encounters with Guatemalan women over the years.  "I had the privilege of sharing with participants the amazing strength, courage and 'beauty under fire' of five Guatemalan women -- how Common Hope helps with their burdens, and how participants could help women around them who are carrying similar loads."

Two former long-term volunteers, Kaela Vronsky and Gwyneth Fries, helped to facilitate the workshop, which was attended by about 150 employees of Best Buy.  Each participant made a card or poster for one of the women honored, which Tamalyn will take back to the women as a source of encouragement. One workshop participant said, "I realized that I have more in common with Guatemalan women than I thought, but though I was poor growing up, we always had food to eat."

Tamalyn was delighted to run into two current Sponsors and a former Vision Team member at the event, as well as several people who were planning to travel to Guatemala soon and added Common Hope to their travel plans.  Another woman in the audience was Guatemalan and shared that her family left Guatemala for the States to find a better life, just as Tamalyn's family left the States for Guatemala to walk with Guatemalans in creating a better life. "We are all connected, as this powerful networking event demonstrated," said Tamalyn. "By partnering with Best Buy/WOLF, Common Hope is able to engage more people in our work of providing hope and opportunity."  Thank you to Best Buy/WOLF for this opportunity!
Target interns collect school supplies
Target Interns
Our school supply drive got off to a great start this fall thanks to a group of interns at Target Corporation headquarters in Minneapolis.  In August the interns collected and delivered over 130 backpacks filled with supplies.

What's more, on the day of delivery the group surprised us with $500 in Target gift cards to be used for additional supply needs.  Thank you to Target Corporation and the Target interns!

Click here for a collection of photos of their delivery.
Students in Guatemala City pitch in
First and second grade students at Colegio Aleman, the German School in Guatemala City, collected school lunch supplies for the students in San Rafael, including rice, beans, sugar, flour, and millk.  It is always inspiring to hear of kids helping kids.  Thank you to the students of Colegio Aleman!
You Can Help
Got a few extra supplies to spare as you begin the new school year?
Our September need of the month is school supplies, including glue, pencils, pencil sharpeners, scissors, metric rulers, calculators, and compasses -- supplies students are required to purchase to attend school.  You can view the full list on our website, or check out the list of items available at Target.

Check out the status of all of our supply drives on our website.
Height measurer needed in San Rafael
measuringYou may remember our recent story about nutritional testing at San Rafael.  The site is in need of a freestanding height measurer, which costs about $400, in order to continue to better track the nutritional status of the children.  Our health care partner, FARO, will also be able to make use of this resource.  Click here for an example.

If you can purchase this item, please call Andrew Allen at (651) 917-0917 or send him an email.
Hey kids, help us collect plastic figurines
The psychology staff members in Antigua need more plastic figurines for their therapeutic play with children.  A wide variety of figures can be used (people, animals, trees, even cars), including those you might get in a Happy Meal.

If you have any you are willing to share, please contact Andrew via email or at (651) 917-0917.
Thanks to participants of the Combined Federal Campaign
Thank you to all of our federal employee supporters who have generously donated through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC).  The Latin America Fund recently notified us that your generosity totaled $10,300 in pledges to Common Hope for the 2007 campaign.

This fall we have changed federations to Child Aid International (CAI), the first federation in the CFC that is focused entirely on providing aid, assistance and advocacy to children overseas.  You can always designate Common Hope directly using our unique organization number, which is still #10995.  Thank you again to all donors of the Combined Federal Campaign!
Traveling to Guatemala?  Got any luggage space?
luggage With the new luggage restrictions imposed by airlines, it will be even more challenging for Common Hope to carry down all of the mail and supplies needed, including many school supplies for the 2009 school year beginning in January.  If you are traveling light to Guatemala and are willing to carry a checked bag for Common Hope, please send Andrew Allen an email, or call him at (651) 917-0917.
