New study about inequality in Guatemala by Jeff Barnes
An article in a recent edition of Prensa Libre, one of Guatemala's major newspapers, gives some striking data on the level of
inequality in Guatemala. ...
What was particularly noteworthy about this story is how they expressed
it, apparently drawing from a new report by the United Nations Development
Program. The UNDP calculates a Human Development Index to measure
and compare the overall quality of life in countries around the world.
According to the article, Guatemala City would rank
alongside the country of Bulgaria in its Human Development Index (53 out of 177
nations), while the village of Jocotán would fit in next to the African nation
of Chad (170 of 177).
While Bulgaria and Chad are 1,500
miles apart on two different continents, Jocotán is a village
less than 80 miles northeast of the capitol. Read more... |

Two containers headed South
In mid
July, two containers of in-kind supplies were packed at our
warehouse and
shipped South. The loads, which arrived in Guatemala several weeks ago and await approval in customs, contain everything from fabric to school
supplies to
computer monitors to work boots. Notable donations include 600 towels from Lifetime Fitness, 200 Spanish-language
books
from Scholastic, technology equipment from Best Buy, and about 1,400 Beanie Babies from Laurie and Dan Bergeron and several Amery, WI area schools.
A
dozen volunteers helped to load the containers, each of which was packed in
under two hours. This was possible in large part because of the
diligent organizing of several regular warehouse volunteers, who prepped all of
the supplies for shipment. Thanks
are due as well to Karen Reichensperger of The MESSAGE Program, who trained our shipping staff and is facilitating the paperwork at the customs office in Guatemala City to get the
containers processed quickly.
A warm welcome to the newly promoted Guatemala Warehouse Manager, Cecilio Fuentes Cardona, previously a driver for Common Hope, who will be receiving the supplies when they arrive at the Family Development Center. Thanks as well to long-term volunteer Lynn Miller for her years of work in the warehouse. Many thanks to everyone who had a hand in this major in-kind effort!

A most original fundraiserMarcus du
Sautoy, Sponsor of student Jorge Carias, recently concocted a creative
fundraiser that we could never have even dreamed of. Marcus, a professor
of mathematics at Wadham College, Oxford, has discovered a host of
"symmetrical objects in hyperspace." He writes
that these shapes, while beyond the three dimensions we live in, end up explaining things like the behavior of viruses and
crystals. And, Marcus explains that once
discovered, the objects need names, just like stars in the atmosphere or
craters on the moon. So, for a donation
of at least $10, Marcus has offered to name an object after a person of the
donor's choosing. To date, Marcus has raised $986 for Common Hope!
You can read more about Marcus's work in an article he wrote for the U.K.-based newspaper The Daily Telegraph, or on his fundraising page. |

So many visits, so little time!
The Vision Team from Faith
Lutheran Church
of Monticello, MN was busy on their recent ten-day trip. This group of twelve conducted 21 sponsorship visits while in Guatemala. They met and exchanged stories with students of all ages, sponsored by
team members and their friends. Several of the students are looking forward
to graduation this fall.
We'd like to thank this team for the dedication they
have shown to the sponsorship program - giving extra funds to help families
with unexpected financial troubles, and thinking of ways to help us find new Sponsors.
There are many students still waiting for a Sponsor. If you would like to help, please email Jessie, or call her at (651) 917-1045.

Got a few extra supplies to spare as you prepare for the new school year?
Our August need of the month is school supplies, including glue, pencils, pencil sharpeners, scissors, metric rulers, calculators, and compasses - supplies students are required to have to attend school. You can view the full list on our website, or check out the list of items available at Target. Our school supply drive got off to great start thanks to a group of interns at Target Corporation headquarters in Minneapolis. In early August, the interns collected and delivered over 130 backpacks filled with supplies! Look for photos of their delivery in an upcoming eNews.
Thank you to
all who helped collect soap and towels throughout July. Our goal was 1,200 bars of soap and towels and we are well on our way, with over 800 bars of soap and 950 towels received! You can check out the status of all of our supply drives on our website.

Help us complete registration for new students with a laminating machine
The sponsorship staff in Guatemala needs a new laminating machine
to create the identity cards
that all affiliated children and their families receive. These cards contain identification as well as information about the family's
classification, and therefore the level of support a family is entitled
to. The machines get heavy use as we affiliate new students, so we inevitably need to replace them every once and awhile.
An in-kind donation would be greatly appreciated! Please call Andrew Allen at (651) 917-0917 or send him an email if you would like to help.

Check out our Guatemala photo display
There's still time to check out the images of Guatemala displayed at Cosmic's Coffee Bar in St. Paul, MN. The coffee shop kindly donated their wall
space for a month to showcase a collection of photographs of Guatemalan family life, taken
by local professional photographers.
Stop into Cosmic's anytime through August 15 to check out the photos. If you know of a coffeeshop or cafe in your area that would be interested in having a photo exhibit, please contact Louise via email or at (651) 917-2050.

Volunteers, learn Spanish before you go!
Speak Shop offers a way to take Spanish lessons via webcam with tutors at the PROBIGUA Immersion school in Antigua.
"It feels much more like you are in the same room
when both sides have the webcam," says Clay
Cooper, who co-founded Speak Shop with his wife, Cindy,
after studying Spanish in Antigua. Clay
and Cindy volunteered at Common Hope when launching Speak Shop in 2004, and
they previously sponsored a child. "We love Common Hope's mission and smart,
pragmatic programs. It's great to be able to work with an organization that is like-minded about bridging the digital divide and creating economic
opportunities in Guatemala," says
Cindy.
Clay realized that when tourist season dried up,
most tutors lost their jobs and struggled financially. Tutors are earning a better living by being
able to set their own hours and teach year-round through Speak Shop. Lessons cost about $8 an hour. Visit www.speakshop.com for more details.
