Greetings!

News from Guatemala
Rising Cost of Living
Market A follow-up to our article in the Fall 2007 newsletter: the Prensa Libre recently published an article regarding continued inflation in Guatemala, particularly in terms of education costs. By law, schools in Guatemala can only raise tuition fees every three years but by no more than 15 percent.  In the past year, however, a number of fines have been issued to schools that haven't complied.  Click here for the full article in Spanish, or here for a rough translation.
In the words of Kaela Vronsky
Graduation 2007 Former interim Antigua site director, Kaela Vronsky recently spoke about her time with Common Hope and what in her opinion makes Common Hope's work distinct.  Says Kaela:

"Common Hope has such an incredibly huge place in my heart precisely for what sets it apart from other organizations.  I attribute this deep appreciation largely to Common Hope's holistic, fearless, accountable, heart-full, and highly humanistic approach to development and administration."

Gracias from Guatemala
Graduation 2007 Pablo, after-school project coordinator at New Hope School, would like to thank all of the Vision Teams that have helped collect supplies and support the program over the past year.

Teams have organized everything from a volleyball match to an ultimate Frisbee game, encouraged learning through creative math games and simple science projects, and brought out students' creativity through beading and origami. Teams generously donated much of the equipment and materials needed for these great activities and brought them to Guatemala in their own luggage.

Pablo and the kids agree the inaugural year of this program was a huge success. Thank you!

Common Hope goes live!
KDWA

On January 30, 2008, Outreach Manager Louise Lundgren joined fellow Vision Team members Jan and Dick Marthaler for a live interview with KDWA Radio Hastings to talk about their Vision Team experience last November. Almost an hour was devoted to learning about Common Hope and how Vision Teams can make a difference in Guatemala. Please click here to listen to the interview.

Reflections from a Vision Team volunteer
Graduation 2007 Janet Strek of Stillwater, Minn. shares one of her most memorable moments from her recent trip to Guatemala:

One of the last days, we planted trees. In Guatemala this meant using a pick axe to chip away at bedrock. It was grueling work and each time we thought we were done, our supervisor would say "poco mas" - a little more. That night in our reflection time, one of our team members said maybe that's the point. If we all just did "poco mas," our tree of life may produce "mucha fruta grande," or much great fruit.

Contact us at visionteam@commonhope.org if you would like more information about joining or leading a team.
Orinda Community Church helps San RafaelTruck Puzzle
The recent Vision Team from Orinda, Calif. got creative with their fundraising efforts. To help Common Hope purchase a vehicle for the new San Rafael site, Lani Shepp and her team "sold" car parts to members of their church community - $50 for a tire, $250 for the windshield. The team raised over $7,000 to support the purchase of a truck that is being used to transport staff from Antigua to San Rafael. When the team visited Guatemala in April they received a special thank you from the San Rafael staff!  To see the team in action in Guatemala, click here.
One Sponsor's blog
Graduation 2007 Sponsor Julie Siegel has a blog in which she wrote about her recent visit to her sponsored student.  Julie shares her perspective on the connection she sees between sponsoring a student and preserving the environment.  Click here for her full blog entry, "Healthy People, Healthy Profits, Healthy Planet."
You Can Help
Dehumidifier needed in the Antigua library
Before the rainy season starts in May, Antigua education staff need to purchase a dehumidifier for the Antigua site library.  Help us perserve the library's books and materials so that students can use them for years to come.  Staff estimate the dehumidifier will cost Q2000, or about $260.  If you can help us purchase this item, please contact Joanne Arnold Griffin, Development Director, at joanneg@commonhope.org or (651) 917-0243.
Collect colored pencils and sharpeners
Colored PencilsOur April need of the month is 1,800 hand-held pencil sharpeners and 12-packs of colored pencils, as we begin to collect supplies for the 2009 school year.  In-kind supply drives help us to keep our costs down and direct monetary donations toward other crucial program needs

Thank you to all who helped to collect hats, mittens, and scarves in March.  With your help, we collected 1,214 of these items
-more than meeting our goal!  These items will keep children and families warm on cold nights in the highlands of Guatemala.  Thank you!

Help clean out the warehouse
Graduation 2007 In an effort to minimize the impact of an impending rent increase, Common Hope needs to decrease the amount of warehouse space we use by as much as 50 percent.  This effort will require lots of volunteer help.  Contact Andrew Allen at (651) 917-0917 or andrewa@commonhope.org to offer your help, or keep checking our St. Paul volunteer calendar as work dates are finalized.
Support new initiatives of the U.S. Office
