St. Paul, Minn. -
August 23, 2007 - Actor Josh Hartnett
donated a matching gift of $50,000 to Common Hope, a non-profit that works to improve the lives of families
in Guatemala, during one of their recent fundraising events.
"My family raised me to
reach out to the less fortunate with the gifts bestowed upon me," said
Harnett. "I'm certainly glad to see this
kind of program being initiated in my home town area and am happy to help such a
good cause."
Donations like Hartnett's
have helped bring transformative changes to the lives of thousands of
impoverished Guatemalan students like Maria Sara Dunbar, a courageous young
women who spoke at the event. Previously
a sponsored student through Common Hope,
Dunbar is now a social worker who has dedicated her skills to improving her
community.
Several hundred attendees
turned out for the annual Noche de Colores fundraiser which, with Hartnett's
gift, generated over $200,000. Event
funds will be used to support programs serving impoverished children and
families in the areas of education, health care and housing.
