BOSTON, May 6, 2008
- Promoting a healthy lifestyle and sustainable development in an
energetic open-air atmosphere, the hipper-than-thou Sowa Open Market is a community icon as
well as the hottest place to see and be seen on Sundays in the Sowa Art
District of Boston. The Market celebrates its fifth year with a special opening
weekend celebration in conjunction with the annual Sowa Art Walk, boasting 140
vendors on May 17-18, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. followed by a weekly
Market held on Sundays from 10:00 - 4:00 p.m., excluding holiday weekends,
until October 26, 2008.
With an abundance of colors, sounds, aromas, and a strong community spirit in
the air, the Market's development is a good representation of many different
groups working together for a common community goal - to give Boston a unique
center to network while shopping for healthy edibles, fragrant blooms, DIY
crafts and designer wares from established artisans including paintings,
jewelry, handbags, accessories, sculpture, and clothing along with affordable
mid-century modern furniture, antiques and collectibles. At the Market,
seasoned professionals gather alongside students and beginners aspiring to
develop their skills in a friendly environment. Everyone has a place at the Sowa
Open Market.

New to the Market this season is The Paper Apartment, Vonica Designs, Heather Wang Jewelry, and Pistachio. Angela Stasio of The Paper Apartment is a mixed-media
artist with a particularly soft spot for paper and collage. Her work
ranges from small pieces constructed entirely of paper and found vintage images
to full-scale illustrations incorporating a variety of media including paper,
fabric, acrylic paint and colored pencil. Vonica
Designs, a Boston-based indie design studio specializing in fun functional
retro and modern wares, offers handbags, business card holders, and iPod cases.
If you're looking for organic-inspired jewelry, you'll love the handmade
elegance of Heather Wang Jewelry. If
it's fashion from times past that you crave, everything old is new again with Pistachio handbags and accessories from
designer, Marisa Danielle. These designers are just a few of the many new
artists represented this year at the Market.
Whether you plan to visit the Sowa Open Market to simply enjoy a cup of coffee
while taking a leisurely stroll as you catch up with the locals, or to beeline
over to your favorite vendors to shop for unique wares beneath sunny skies,
you'll enjoy this bustling urban marketplace. With an ever-changing group of
artisans, free admission, a hip convenient location and plenty of parking, it's
definitely a trip worth making. In fact, we're willing to bet that once you visit
your first Sunday market, you'll be hooked, becoming a Market regular. See you
on Sundays!
