Cautious Optimism: You Can Remove Gridlock

A Rare Example of Bipartisanship is an important article by David Ignatius in The Washington Post on how cooperation is possible even in the most gridlocked situations.  I urge you to read it.

According to Ignatius, the House Intelligence Committee "used to be one of the meanest snake pits in Congress." And now this committee works together to get vitally important work done. Here is what stands out to me:

1. The chair, Rep. Mike Robers (R) and ranking Democratic member, C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger work together. When Rogers was appointed chair he approached his colleague and suggested a truce.

2. They made a commitment to each other to "work together and not sandbag each other."

3. They made some changes in committee staff.

4. They instructed their aides to brief members jointly. I suspect this eliminated the rumor mill and suspicion that others might be getting preferred treatment.

5. They held seminars for new members to get their buy-in.

6. They worked on ways to balance the desires of of very liberal and very conservative members.

7. They wanted "less partisan sniping - but also more aggressive oversight." Not content with mere cooperation which could have results in weak decisions, they set the bar high - more aggressive oversight.

Ignatius suggests that this could be a model for the rest of our gridlocked Congress. I agree, and think this could be a model for removing trying to remove polarized thinking in organizations of all types.

Rick on the Speaking Circuit

I don't conduct many public seminars and keynote speeches, but I've got three coming up over the next three months.

Leading Change without Migraines, a one-day session where I teach my approach to leading change. Very interactive and practical. Expect to work hard and learn a lot you can apply right away. Location: The Gestalt Institute of Cleveland, April 16.

Why Don't You Want What I Want?, a one-day session at The Gestalt Institute of Cleveland. Co-teaching this with my buddy, Jacquie McLemore.  April 17.  If you need to increase your ability to influence, then consider this workshop. You will assess your own skills and develop plans for increasing your ability to get and keep people's attention.

This is the lunch keynote at the annual CBODN conference, May 5, Silver Spring MD and open to the public.

Influence. Action. Change!

We are accepting applications for the next Influence. Action. Change! program at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland. (Distance learning portion begins in early May.) The class will meet for the first time on May 20. For more information click: Influence. Action. Change! Or give me a call.

I recorded a short video describing this program.

Change Open Source Project

In 2009 I started the Change Management Open Source Project. it now has nearly 1000 members from well over thirty countries. Due to my own web illiteracy and a web host that changed its policies after we were up an running (they only allow very short videos and podcasts unless you want to pay a premium price.) Since I want to keep the open source project free, I started looking around for an alternative host.

I am happy to say that we are close to having a new site with what I think will be a better web host. I hope to launch this in February. I will let you know. But, for now, consider "liking"  www.facebook.com/rickmaureronchange. This will automatically sign you up to the new improved Change Management Open Source Project site.
