Greetings!
Brain Research, Five Card Stud, and
Corporate Change
Researchers find that when people are shown
pictures of political candidates their brains
light up signaling disgust, trust, fear,
interest, and so forth.
Too bad we can't hook up our colleagues to
these machines, so that when we present a new
idea we could see how they were responding
instantly. And, that would allow us to adapt
on the fly. Say we noticed that our
audience's minds
were wandering. We could try something
different. There's a lot we could do if only
we knew what was
going on inside those heads. . .
Well, we don't have to wait for Big Brother.
I've been reading Caro's Book of Poker
Tells. Robert Caro tells us how to read
people. The book is written for poker players
to give them tools to know when someone is
bluffing or is holding a powerful hand. The
signals are right there in front of us hidden in
plain sight.
I often ask clients what the signs are that
people are interested in what they are
saying. Some are very good at knowing the
signals. But many don't know what to look
for. I thought I was pretty good at it until
I read Caro's book. This guy sees stuff I
never even look for. So, if you are like me,
stay away from Vegas at the very least, and
find a way to increase your ability to pick
up the "tells."
All of us know the obvious signals. You know,
the Body Language 101 stuff. And we probably get
it when people walk out of the room in a huff
or say, "I hate that idea." But the subtle
things are trickier.
My Question to You: Together, I think
we can improve our skills in this area.
Here's my question: what are the subtle
signals - not the obvious 101 things -- but
the little things that let you know if a
person gets what you are saying, is
interested or afraid, trusts or mistrusts
you? If you'll send me your observations I'll
put these together in an article and send it
to you. Who knows this could turn into
Rick's Big Book of Corporate Change
Tells. Thanks, I look forward to hearing
from you.
Change without Migraines Formula
OK, the Change without Migraines Formula
didn't come out last week. Too many technical
things still need to be completed. But, I am
fairly certain that next Wednesday - November
28 - will be the day. In addition to the
tools I use to help my clients - I have put
together some Quick Tips for Leading Change
that people can download to their iPods. Sort
of last minute tips as you walk into a meeting.
