IT'S IN THE NAME(S)

In the Scriptures, it is common for the name of a person or a location to be an indicator of meaning.  This is certainly true for Jesus and the names associated with him.

Jesus is a transliteration of a Hebrew name which could be rendered Joshua; its literal meaning is "the Lord God (YHWH) delivers."  Emmanuel, another name associated with Jesus, literally means "God with us."  The title Christ is from the Greek, and the Hebrew parallel word in Hebrew is Messiah, which means "Anointed One."

So come Christmas Eve, as we sing of Jesus Christ as our Emmanuel, we are actually making a profound theological claim.  We are giving thanks to God for the gift of One whose life reveals the compassion of God, delivering us from that which would seek to destroy our spirit.  We are giving thanks to God that the One who is given for us truly lived among us at a particular time and place in history, and lives with us in spirit eternally.  And we are giving thanks that the One among us is the anointed one, that is, the sovereign above all sovereigns.

Taken together, these names call upon us to offer sincere worship and praise to God who created - and creates - us, again and again.

Merry Christmas to all!

--Stephen

Do you like to sing? Will you be coming to St. Peter's for either the 5:30PM or 10:30PM service? Members of the congregation are invited to robe and sing with the choir for the carols and mass parts at each service. There will be a rehearsal prior to the service so you can rehearse the parts (music also available in advance). If you're interested in contributing this way to these special services please email Andrew Shenton.

Prayers for and from the Community
Your clergy pray for members of the parish community, and all whose lives fall particularly on our hearts, each day and - in particular - at our noonday gatherings during the week.  Please let either of us know if we can include you in our confidential prayers.

St. Peter's Vestry

St. Peter's Vestry had another busy meeting this past Wednesday night discussing current activities at the parish as well as planning for 2011.  The primary focus of the meeting was the parish's financial results this year and budget preparation for 2011.  Under the able leadership of our Treasurer, Maria Kussmaul, St. Peter's has substantially enhanced its financial accounting capabilities and is on-track to outperform its budget for the year, due to generous financial contributions from our members.  The 2011 budget is still in preparation phase and we will have more details at the parish Annual Meeting scheduled for January.

In addition to finance, we discussed the fall Stewardship effort, which continues to make good progress.  Most St. Peter's families have made a commitment to fund the parish in 2011 so, if you haven't done so already, please consider making a pledge online or by contacting any of us or our Stewardship Chair, Tom King.   Vestry member John Jacobs also led a discussion on next steps for Church Community Builder, the parish's membership database.  The system has a rich set of features that are not yet being fully realized, so we plan to investigate possible ways to make more of these capabilities broadly employed during 2011.

We hope you all are enjoying a wonderful holiday season and look forward to seeing you in church very soon!
