From the Rector's Desk ~Messiah George Frideric Handel composed the oratorio Messiah in 1741, and the first London performance was attended by King George II. As the Hallelujah Chorus began, the King is said to have risen to his feet and to have remained standing throughout the chorus. In such a situation, protocol demands that eveyone stand as well, and the now-familiar tradition of standing for the Hallelujah Chorus began.Just why the King stood is lost to history. Some have argued that he was so moved by the music that he was compelled to stand as the triumphant chorus began. Others say that he rose in tribute to the composer. Still others say he had dozed off, and the loud chorus woke him and he was essentially "startled" to his feet (scholars can be cynical!). I'd like to think that another theory is closer to the truth. Perhaps it took an earthly king to recognize that the Hallelujah Chorus proclaims Christ as king above all kings, and he revealed that understanding by rising to honor the king to whom he, too, is subject.Whatever his reason may have been, I hope you'll want to take part in the "Come and Sing Messiah" at St. Peter's on Sunday, December 12th at 4:00 PM because you want to add your voice (or just your ear, if you prefer) to this wonderful classic.--Stephen
A Note ~~ Many thanks to Beverly Jerold Scheibert, who has served so ably as our music director during Andrew Shenton's exchange professorship this fall in Amsterdam. Beverly will be coming to the end of her time with us as she directs the "Come and Sing" Messiah at 4:00 p.m. Thank you , Beverly!

 | Winter Walkers, Emma and Alex, head out in the cold to walk, because too many others have no home and walk in the cold |
SECOND Annual Weston Winter Walk a Success!!
LAST SUNDAY an amazing and interfaith crowd of young people gathered in the Parish Hall at around 1:00pm to begin the second annual Weston Winter Walk for Elder Homelessness! This is a project of awareness- and fund-raising that addresses the plight and challenges of elders in the city of Boston who are unhoused, with all proceeds from the walk going to help support the street outreach at Hearth, Inc. Nearly 50 walkers - middle schoolers from St Peter's, First Parish Church, Temple Beth Avodah in Newton, and St Julia's Church, as well as many parents and other adults - walked a 3 mile course around the town, turning heads with their presence and hearts with their purpose, and raising over $4,000 as of the walk date! This amount enables Hearth to find housing for one elderly person who currently is unhoused, and it is a wonderful testimony to the walkers and all of their supporters!Thank you to everyone who helped with hospitality, set up and clean up, and - of course - with the walking and guarding of walkers!
See more pictures of the Winter Walk - here!
