ADVENT
One of my favorite prayers in our Book of Common Prayer is the collect for the first Sunday of Advent:
Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
I can recall looking forward as a young child to "Advent Sunday" so I could join others in that prayer.
I like the image of "casting away" those things which lead away from who God calls us to become, and putting on the "armor of light" in striving to engage in those things which God calls us to become. Most of all, I suppose, Ilike the way the imagery suggests the complexity which life constantly puts before us.
In this Advent, I pray for you - and for myself - that we can discern more clearly than ever before those pathways which tempt us to draw away from the selves God calls upon us to become. In this Advent, I pray for you -and for myself - that we can discern more clearly than ever before those pathways which offer us new ways of becoming more the selves which God calls us to become.
And I invite you to join me in saying that wonderful little prayer each day this Advent season.

Holiday Prison Outreach - Holiday Gift Bags!
The population of people who have been incarcerated is a marginalized and nearly forgotten population, and the isolation that they feel this time of year only heightens the sense of worthlessness and shame many of them feel each day of their lives.
The folks at Concord Prison Outreach are providing holiday gift bags and cards to inmates at the Northeastern Correctional Center and MCI-Concord, and they want to be sure everyone gets a gift bag and card! This year they hope to collect and deliver 1700 sets, and for some inmates, this will be the only gift they receive.
You or your family can put a bag and a card together, and I will have a box outside my office this week, and in the foyer on Sunday the 5th, to collect and deliver them on Monday the 6th!
Please limit your bags to the following specific items ONLY (the Department of Corrections is rather adamant!):
· 1 bar of deodorant soap
· 1 tube toothpaste, 5.8 oz. or larger
· 1 pad paper 6" x 9" or 5" x 8", 100 pages (no wire)
· White envelopes #6 3/4 (6 ½" x 3 5/8")
· 1 pair white crew socks (no tube socks, knee highs or "tennis" socks)
· 1 bottle (plastic) shampoo (15 oz max)
· 1 stick deodorant (no roll-ons, 2 oz or larger)
· 1 pocket calendar (no wire; no wall calendars)
You can add a holiday greeting card too ("Merry Christmas" or seasonal greeting of your choice; no religious messages or quotes), signed with first name(s) only, no larger than 8 1/2" X 5 1/2" (smaller would be better), no metal or sharp items (i.e. sequins, pins, etc) or natural fibers such as grasses or flowers. You can use soft, spongy appliqués, glitter, magic markers, crayons, colored pencils or paints to decorate the card.
Individuals or families interested in knowing more can contact Pastor Kirkham (hkirkham@stpetersweston.org).
Flower Guild welcomes you!We invite you to participate in decorating St. Peter's for Christmas 2010. We also invite you to join us when we visit the Church of the Advent on Beacon Hill on Saturday, November 20 at 10 AM to watch their guild arrange flowers for November 21 for the high altar and the Lady Chapel (for the feast of Christ the King, the last Sunday before Advent). Church of the Advent's High Gothic interior calls for very different flowers from what we do in our Georgian colonial church, so this will be an interesting and inspiring visit. Advent Flower Guild director Tom Sopko says, "The choir is doing the Mozart Missa Brevis in C with orchestra as well as a plainsong Te Deum and a couple of motets, so you will get to hear a lot of music while we work.' Let me know if you would like to attend and if you can help this Christmas! Carolyn Ellis 781 899-5880.
