FEAST DAY

Thanksgiving Day is November 25th this year, commonly observed by family members getting together to observe a feast day of thanksgiving.  Despite many changes in our cultural patterns, the observance of Thanksgiving Day continues to thrive, as evidenced by the quantity of food purchased for the meal and the inevitable delays in every mode of travel as people who can do so make it into a four-day weekend.  It is certainly a good thing for families to gather to give thanks for the gifts they have been given.
For too many among us, however, it is a day which serves as a reminder of what they are not able to enjoy due to a variety of life circumstances.  There are many opportunities for those who can be generous at this time of year to help others.

At St. Peter's, we prepare Thanksgiving baskets to be donated to families in need in the vicinity of Weston, gathering this year on Thursday, November 18th at 6:30 PM.  In addition to actually putting together the items for the baskets, we are invited to take part in a tradition encouraged by the Oxfam relief agency.  The tradition is to fast for the day, break the fast together at a simple supper, and donate what we would have spent on the other meals of the day to a relief agency.  The idea is to have a "parallel" to the feast of Thanksgiving Day on the previous Thursday.

Thanks to those who have already donated baskets, and please consider joining us for a simple supper together in the Oxfam tradition.

 Stephen

Thanksgiving Baskets
Thursday, November 18, 7 PM is the time and date this year for St. Peter's to gather and put together Thanksgiving baskets for distribution to needy Waltham neighbors. We also will share a light supper at 6:30.  Donations go to Oxfam for their worldwide projects to help people help themselves. Oxfam suggests skipping one or two meals this day, in solidarity with those who go hungry every day, and then breaking the fast together.

Please contact Judy Campos (781-373-5223) to sign up to bring the contents for a basket. The list of goods is available at coffee hour.
SECOND Annual Weston Winter Walk for Elder Homelessness

GET READY MIDDLE SCHOOLERS...the walk is on December 5th, 2010!

You have a chance to "Get Present" with the walk on Friday night, November 19, from 6:00 to 8:30pm!  We are expanding this year to include - along with St Peter's, St Julia's and First Parish - young folks from Temple Beth Avodah in Newton!

We walk in winter to remind ourselves that others - without homes, living where they can and often on the street or in shelters - walk their days and nights through all weather and seasons.  Hearth, Inc. recognizes that the elderly are distinctively vulnerable to life on the street, and their goal is to eradicate homelessness among that population.  Our walk is to support the outreach effort of Hearth, Inc.

On Friday, November 19th, members of the Outreach team at Hearth will join us for dinner and an evening of fun activities and games that will bring the issue of elder homelessness into sharp focus.  Following dinner and the activities we'll learn about designing your own fundraising website for the walk, hand out official "walk packets" and enjoy s'mores around a fire outside!

If you have questions or want to participate, contact Peggy Batchelder (rdbatchelder@comcast.net), Joan Parrish (joanparrish@comcast.net), Margaret Randle (margaretrandle@gmail.com) or Hall Kirkham (hkirkham@stpetersweston.org) by Monday, November 15th, so we have enough materials and food for Friday night!

Flower Guild welcomes you!
We invite you to participate in decorating St. Peter's for Christmas 2010. We also invite you to join us when we visit
Church of the Advent on Beacon Hill on Saturday, November 20 at 10 AM to watch their guild arrange flowers for November 21 for the high altar and the Lady Chapel (for the feast of Christ the King, the last Sunday before Advent). Church of the Advent's High Gothic interior calls for very different flowers from what we do in our Georgian colonial church, so this will be an interesting and inspiring visit. Advent Flower Guild director Tom Sopko says, "The choir is doing the Mozart Missa Brevis in C with orchestra as well as a plainsong Te Deum and a couple of motets, so you will get to hear a lot of music while we work.' Let me know if you would like to attend and if you can help this Christmas! Carolyn Ellis 781 899-5880
