GOD LOVETH A CHEERFUL GIVER

When I was a youngster, I was given a weekly allowance to spend as I desired.  Although no one told me I had to "put something in the [offering] plate" at church, I saw my father do so and knew it was just what one did.  The question I asked myself was "How much should it be?

That decision had a material effect on my daily life, even if it was only about what I could afford at the candy store, the variety store or the appliance store which also sold 45 rpm vinyl records.  Whatever I decided, I can say that while I was not unhappy to do it, I wasn't very cheerful about it either.  I thought of it in terms of what the money would have allowed me to do for myself.  So when I heard it said that God loveth a cheerful giver, I don't think I really understood.

I eventually learned that the verse is in one of Paul's letters to the Christians in the city of Corinth, urging them to give to the needs of the community:
"The one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.  Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

In context, the reason to give to the needs of the community is that the more one is willing to give (in every sense of the word), the more one is opened up to the full harvest of God's life-giving spirit.  That is not possible when giving is done with great reluctance or under the compulsion of a "rule" of some sort.

Your parish church is asking you to consider how you wish to support our community life in the coming year.  I hope you will find that the more one sows into the life of the parish, the more one will reap of the joy which God has in store for us in our life together, here and now.

Drop-In Discussion Group
We welcome Joan Parrish as she leads us in a discussion of four short stories based on a faith theme.  The last session will take place on October 27 at 9:30 in the Bidwell Room, where we will talk about these reading adventures.  Joan is an experienced group leader and currently teaches short story courses at the Regis LLARC program and the Weston COA. Copies of the stories will be available in the Office.  Questions?  Pat Jensen, Shannon Hartmann.  Please come to one or all meetings.
Adult Bible Study
Adult Bible Study meets each Sunday morning at 9 in the Bidwell Room. On October 24, the clergy will lead a discussion of Luke 20:27-38.

Ministries

 Vestry
St. Peter's Vestry had another busy meeting this past Tuesday discussing our ministries and the various activities underway at the parish this fall.  We were fortunate to be joined by St. Peter's Pastoral Care ministry.  This group of dedicated parishioners plays a quiet but critical role supporting our members most in-need due to illness or other personal challenges with flowers, food, cards, prayers, and fellowship.  Hearing about their activities and impact is always inspirational and this week's session was no exception.  There are many ways all of us can get involved with Pastoral Care, so if you are interested please contact the Pastoral Care leadership, Stephen, Hall, or any member of the Vestry.  Equally important, if you or your family are in need for any reason, please don't hesitate to contact any of us.

We also spent substantial time reviewing the fall Stewardship effort, which is now in full swing.  Many of you have already stepped forward to make a financial commitment to support St. Peter's in 2011, for which we are very grateful.  All of you should have received information in the mail and will continue to receive electronic communication on the pledge process.  If you have questions, please contact our Stewardship Chair, Tom King, or any member of the Vestry.  Finally, the Vestry and clergy reviewed a variety of other business items, including our financial reporting, different Outreach initiatives, and a few Property matters.

We hope the fall continues to go well for all of you and look forward to seeing you in church very soon!

Diaper Depot ~ Ongoing

We'd like to thank everyone for their support last Sunday with the donation of diapers and remind folks that we will be collecting diapers on an on-going basis to help Christ Church with their Diaper Ministry. A collection box will be downstairs in the coat cabinet and as the box is filled we will bring the diapers to Waltham. Thank you. Outreach Committee.

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH have an exciting event planned for Sunday, October 24 at common cathedral!

ecclesia
On Sunday, October 24 the young folks of our parish will offer their hospitality to the parishioners of common cathedral (http://www.ecclesia-ministries.org/common_cathedral.html) downtown by providing and serving lunch, and providing conversation and their holy presence, on Boston Common near Park Street.  We will then worship together and join with common cathedral parishioners in Holy Communion, and reflect afterwards on the experience.  common cathedral is run by Ecclesia Ministries and serves as an important community not only for people experiencing homelessness but also for suburban parishes who want to be involved with unhoused people.   About one-fourth of Sunday worshippers are from housed congregations.

Our convoy will leave St Peter's at 11:30am and return by 3:30pm.  Please let us know if you plan on joining us!!

We also welcome your prayers on that day and as we prepare for the outing, and we also invite you to help us gather badly needed program supplies for the common art and common cinema programs that Ecclesia Ministries offers men and woman who are struggling with homelessness:
