From the Rector's Desk...
OF BAPTISM Last week, I reflected on the history behind Confirmation as
I invited parish families with 8th graders (or older, if not
confirmed) to contact me as we are forming the confirmation class for the
coming year.
This week, I want to say a word about baptism as we look
forward to the baptisms of Samuel Bartlett and Edmond Kirkham on Sunday,
October 17th.
Some of us may recall baptism as something which was done
privately - that is, separately from the principal Sunday worship service. I was baptized in the chapel of my home
parish church on a Saturday afternoon, and my principal memory is that most of
the lights were off, the chapel was chilly, and the water was cold. The connection between the baptism and
the life of the congregation was not the first thought that crossed my mind (I
was nearly 6 years old when I was baptized, so I do have some "emotional"
memory of the occasion).
While there continue to be times when private baptism is the
better choice, it has become more normative to renew the early Church practice
of baptism as part of the principal worship service. In ancient days, baptisms typically occurred on Easter
morning as the sun was rising, following an all-night vigil of scripture
readings and prayers. Today, we
typically incorporate baptism into a principal Sunday service. The intention is to remind us that
baptism is a community event, and that our own baptismal vows are renewed as we
participate in this wonderful liturgy.
Please join us as we give thanks for Edmond and Samuel and
their families on October 17th.

Worship
This Sunday, October 10th, is SPECIAL! All Sunday School grades meet in the 2nd and 3rd Grade Classroom (Ground Floor, next to the Nursery) for a children's Eucharist and singing! Teachers have the day off! Peace and thank you! Hall
Drop-In Discussion Group We
welcome Joan Parrish as she leads us in a discussion of
four short stories based on a faith theme. The sessions will take
place on October 6, 13, 20 and 27 at
9:30 in the Bidwell Room, where we will talk about these reading
adventures. Joan is an experienced group leader and
currently teaches short story courses at the Regis LLARC program and
the Weston
COA. Copies of the stories will be available in the Office.
Questions? Pat Jensen, Shannon Hartmann. Please come to one or all
meetings.
Adult Bible Study Adult
Bible Study meets each Sunday morning
at 9 in the Bidwell Room. On October 17, the clergy will lead a discussion of Luke 18:9-14.

Ministries
Outreach Committee to Meet The next meeting of the Outreach Committee will be held on Sunday, October 17th, after the 10am service. Stay tuned for the meeting location. Any questions, contackt Karen Montague. Thanks!
October 17th - Diaper Sunday Please join us in support of Waltham's Christ Church "Diaper
Ministry". Many people do not
realize that government programs like WIC or food stamps do not cover
diapers. Diapers can cost up to
.50 cents each depending upon size and where purchased. The average newborn uses up to 8 per
day. Many poor families do not
have the transportation needed to get to big box stores and instead, rely on
local drug stores with much higher prices. Diapers are required to be provided by parents for children
attending day care centers.
Without an adequate supply of diapers, a parent cannot go to work. If a family doesn't have clean diapers
to provide for their children, a child could spend days at a time in the same
dirty diaper. A CRYING BABY IS
MORE LIKELY TO BE A VICTIM OF CHILD ABUSE.
Christ Church distributes 30 diapers per month to low income
Waltham families. Not
surprisingly, the demand for diapers has been steadily increasing over the past
year since the inception of the program.
You can help in the following ways:
· Pick up a
package (or two) of diapers next time you are at the store and bring to DIAPER
SUNDAY on October 17th.
They are especially in need of larger sizes (4,5,6). Coincidentally that
is the Sunday that we have two very important baptisms to celebrate: Edmond
Kirkham and Sam Bartlett. Consider
it a baptismal gift on their behalf!
This will be a kick off to an on-going diaper collection.
· Volunteer
to help package diapers the 1st Saturday of every month from 10:00
AM - 12 Noon at Christ Church in Waltham.
· Participate
in the Amazon diaper registry that benefits the Diaper Depot at Christ Church.
On behalf of the Outreach Committee, thank you! For more information please contact Karen Montague

package our lunches during Church School at St Peter's Parish Hall on
Sunday morning, October 24, and leave the Church by 11:30 in order to be

3:30pm for pick-up.
IF YOU ARE A PARENT and are INTERESTED IN HELPING OUT,
