From the Rector's Desk...
OF SERMONS
The Sunday morning sermon traces its roots to the sabbath
observances of the Jewish community. The rabbi (which literally means "teacher") instructed the community
about the meaning of the scripture reading, and was generally responsible for
sustaining the traditions of the faith. As in earlier Christian times, most of those hearing a sermon had
received a rudimentary education (at best). In our time, most people hearing a sermon in a parish church
are far better educated and aware of what is transpiring in the world around
them. However, the value of
helping all of us make the connection between the bible passages read at church
services and our own daily lives is not diminished. In some ways, the overwhelming volume of information (and
misinformation) we receive in our culture makes a useful sermon all the more
important. In response to comments received from the parish survey,
some initial steps intended to maximize the value of the sermon have already
been taken. They include: · recording the 10:00 AM sermon and making it accessible via
the website at www.stpetersweston.org - if you are
away on a Sunday (or teaching Sunday School classes), or if you just want to hear a portion of (or all of!) a sermon
a second time to refresh
your memory, you can now conveniently do so. · continuing to focus on the Gospel text at the 9:00 AM Sunday morning Bible Study-the discussion is clergy-led,
but intentionally draws out the thoughts and reactions of those
who attend to the Gospel text for the following
Sunday, allowing the preacher to have
a sense of how lay people might react to a text before beginning focused work on the
passage. · inviting informal conversation with the preacher about the
sermon - at coffee hour, in
person individually, by email, or by phone as may be desired. Hall joins me in the hope that the preached
word at St. Peter's is as useful and meaningful for the parish family as is humanly
possible, and in the prayer that what God needs each of us to hear will be
enabled among us.

Ministries
Message from the Vestry September has started with a flurry of activities at St. Peter's and the Vestry had a similarly busy meeting this past Tuesday. First, we were joined by the new leadership of our Parish Life ministry. As most of you know, Parish Life directs the variety of fellowship events throughout the year at St. Peter's and we are incredibly fortunate to have the architects of the spring anniversary event, Michelle King and Suzie Reeves, newly leading this effort for the parish. We discussed planning for multiple existing and new events for the coming year and you should all prepare to have lots of opportunities for parish fellowship in the months to come!
Second, we spent substantial time discussing plans for the coming fall Stewardship campaign. St. Peter's is equally fortunate to have Tom King serving as the Chair of Stewardship this year and he is bringing lots of fresh ideas to how we annually fund the various ministries of St. Peter's. The fall campaign will be launching earlier this year so stay tuned for updates that will be soon forthcoming. Finally, the Vestry and clergy reviewed the variety of startup activities that happen at St. Peter's after Labor Day, as well as our usual business items.
We hope the Fall is off to a productive start for all of you and look forward to seeing you in church very soon! - St. Peter's Vestry (Ann Lombard, Anne Ruggles, Chris Phaneuf, Jim McDaniel, John Jacobs, Maria Kussmaul, Marshall Bartlett, Peggy Batchelder, Sarah Ardila, Tom Keery, and Tom King) Flower Guild We

Massachusetts at Bently University in Waltham. Laura
will demonstrate how to make an arrangement for Sunday worship. Betsy
Madsen, who is president of Mass Horticultural Society, and I will talk
about the many ways that Flower Guild ministry serves the parish,
through fellowship and pastoral care, and goes beyond putting flowers
in a vase. Here is the link for more info and to register. Please join us! Carolyn Ellis, Chair, St. Peter's Flower Guild
