From the Rector's Desk...
RENEWAL
The Jewish community observes Rosh Hashanah (the celebration of the New Year, this year being
5771) beginning with sundown on September 8th, a joyous season which
concludes with the Yom Kippur, a day
of atonement for sin which is mean to bring refreshment by the release of that
which holds us back from being our best selves.
In Islam, the end of the Ramadan
month of fasting concludes with a joyous feast to give thanks for spiritual
cleansing on Eid Al-Fitr, this year
on September 10th.
Our Christian calendar does not have an observance of such
broad importance at this time of year, although "Celebration Sundays" welcoming
the return of many church programs which have been in recess during the summer
are so commonplace as to be a sort of festival of their own.
However, the Christian calendar does observe the Day of the
Holy Cross each year on September 14.
It may seem odd that a symbol of violent death is the focus of a day
(other than Good Friday), but I think it does point us to the source of our
spiritual lives. The Cross is the
"crux" of our faith journey, the place where the appearance of unrecoverable
loss gives way to "little resurrections" of renewed life, opportunities, and
hope.
I hope you will want to be an active part of this parish
community of St. Peter's as people who seek signs of God's life-giving presence
in all things.
Come and see what might be in store for you at St. Peter's
this particular "new" year.

St. Peter's Newcomers Community Join us and be a part of growing St. Peter's! The St. Peter's Newcomers Committee is looking for volunteers! ST PETER'S CHURCH SCHOOL WANTS YOU...!
Our wonderful Church School exists because parishioners step forward
to get involved teaching, substituting, observing, or simply offering
support wherever they can, and without YOU we would not have this
important offering for our families!
Church School runs this year from September 12, 2010 to June 5,
2011, watch for details. At this point in the summer - and with the
start of school less than a month away - we need teachers for any
portion of the year (fall / winter / spring). PLEASE let Sarah Ardila,
Teresa Swanson or Pastor Kirkham know if you are able to help!
Remember: you can teach regularly, help out as a substitute, or
help only on monthly "Special
Sundays." To quote Outback, "No rules: just right." Whatever you are
interested in doing, we are eager to make it work. Church School is
such an important offering!
This year we will augment our on-line curriculum with questions like...
What in general is the church and what are its traditions? Who is God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? What is the Bible and what are some of its key stories? And finally, what is our relationship to all of this?
Are you willing to enact this part of your ministry? Please let us know, and know that we are grateful,
Hall Kirkham ( hkirkham@stpetersweston.org) STEPHEN MINISTRY TRAINING Have you wanted or felt
called to help others in crisis or during particular life challenges? Perhaps you would be interested in becoming a
Stephen Minister. Stephen Ministry is a
caring ministry where lay caregivers (called Stephen Ministers) provide
one-to-one Christian care to the bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill,
separated, divorced, unemployed, relocated, and others facing a crisis or life
challenge. Stephen Ministry helps
pastors and congregations provide quality caring ministry for as long as people
need it. St Anne's in-the-Fields in
Lincoln will host a half day workshop from 9am to 1pm on Saturday, September 18th
to receive hands-on caring ministry training, and to learn more about Stephen
Ministry and how we at St Peter's can become involved! For more information on
Stephen Ministry, visit their website at http://www.stephenministries.org/ or for
more information on the training opportunity contact either Pastor Voysey or
Pastor Kirkham.

Parish Life Greetings From the Vestry to all St. Peter's parishioners: We hope you are all well and had a terrific summer. As you know, this Sunday marks the start of the fall church season and we hope you'll note the multitude of activities and progress across our ministries, from the launch of Church School and our Youth Programs; the September Celebration; our new Newcomers team; and a freshly painted steeple! There is one other important development that you'll surely notice - a new traffic pattern in the parish's driveway and parking lot. As shown in the following graphic, the entry and exit points for St. Peter's and the general flow of traffic has been modified and clarified. We recognize that any change has the potential for disruption and we wanted to assure everyone that this one was not made lightly or unadvisedly. The proposal grew out of a concern raised in the parish-wide survey about church signage generally, which was given to our very able Property Committee to consider. The Committee brought proposals, including the new traffic pattern, to the Vestry over the summer which decided to move forward with the change. Especially for newcomers, the suggested pattern makes the close-in parking spaces and chapel access more immediately obvious; it allows people to be dropped off at the main entry when desirable; and it makes access to the parish hall entry door clearer. This suggested traffic pattern is primarily for use during Sunday mornings. Please feel free to contact either of us, Stephen, Hall, members of the Vestry, and/or members of the Property Committee with any questions and concerns. We look forward to seeing you all on Sunday. Marshall Bartlett, Senior Warden Peggy Batchelder, Junior Warden
