GROWING

Each Sunday from now through October, the church liturgical color is green.  The fabric hangings on the pulpit, lectern and altar and the vesture worn by the ministers are intended to use specific colors to visually reinforce the theme of the church season.  Green is meant to suggest the natural color of plants and trees which reveal renewed life in the springtime, understood as symbolic of the eternal character of God to be life-giving.

The gospel readings in July, September and October are all from the Gospel of Mark and include a variety of parables and teaching stories which were (and are) evocative because they use familiar images of our human experience to help us understand the nature of God more deeply.  They are good gospels to grow on.

Sociologically, the irony of this long "green" season after Pentecost is that these rich parables and other teaching stories come at a time when family vacations and summer activities are at their peak.
I hope you will want to take the opportunity to join in Sunday worship wherever your travels may take you, so that you can hear and reflect on these gospel texts in the relatively relaxed patterns of the summer season.

When you are in town, please join us at St. Peter's!  Service times remain the same - 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM.  At 10:00 AM, we welcome Barry Singer as our summer musician again this year.  The music of the piano, the singing of familiar hymns, and the summer altar create an informal and familial atmosphere for worship.  And please note...summer sermons strive to live up to a good goal for any public speakers...be sincere, be brief, and be seated!

Church School

To Parents and non-Parent Adults of St Peter's Church:

Our last Sunday School class of the term is June 14th.  The next Sunday School term will begin on Sept 13th, and we will continue with the format we have had this Spring: class begins at 9:45 and the children and teachers enter the service at approximately 10:30.

We would LOVE to expand our wonderful group of willing and able Sunday School teachers!  You do NOT have to be a parent to be a teacher, and this is a WONDERFUL way to serve our community!

All you need is a little imagination, a smile, and the rest is easy....PLUS the kids are TERRIFIC and eager to learn!

The curriculum is on-line, easy to access, and lessons are simple to follow.  Ideally we will have two teachers per class so that there is flexibility with your schedule!

It is fun, easy and rewarding, and the MORE volunteers we can get the EASIER and MORE flexible scheduling can be!

Are you interested? just curious?  PLEASE contact one of us to learn more!

Cathedral of the Holy Cross

Admission free

St. Peter's Church, Weston, is pleased to invite the public to an organ recital by St. Peter's Music Director Andrew Shenton playing the fantastic 1875 E. & G.G. Hook & Hastings Organ at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston's historic South End. This organ, opus 801, is the largest extant organ built by the Hook and Hastings firm of Weston, MA.  This is a special recital for the Feast of Corpus Christi.

Founded in Boston in 1827, Hook and Hastings moved to Weston, Massachusetts in 1875. In its 108 years of operation, E. and G.G. Hook and Hastings produced and estimated 2,614 organs ranging is size from eight to eighty feet for locations throughout the U.S.  These included organs for First Parish and St. Peter's Church in Weston, Weston College, Wellesley College, the College of Music in Wellesley, and the Unitarian Church in Wellesley Hills.

Hook and Hastings was the largest industry in Weston and produced an organ a week in its huge, wooden factory on Viles Street, just north of the railroad tracts. The company closed in 1935, a victim of the Depression and the building was demolished in 1936.

The company's organs ranged in size from eight to eighty feet and were shipped all over the country.

The Hook & Hastings organ factory was by far the largest industry in Weston, MA. The huge wooden building (above) stood on Viles Street, just north of the railroad tracks, from the late 1880s until it was demolished in 1936. The company's organs ranged in size from eight to eighty feet and were shipped all over the country.

He currently serves on the faculty of Boston University.

Recently he has given recitals in such venues as King's College, Cambridge, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, London, St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue (New York debut), and Washington National Cathedral. B-SAFE Program, St. Martins/St Augustine, Boston, July 20-24

This will be our third year of serving as a partner church in the "Bishop's Summer Academic Fun Enrichment Program". This is a larger effort of the Episcopal Diocese to serve over 450 children at 6 sites in the Boston area in a five week summer day camp. The B-SAFE program provides academic enrichment, sports, field trips, good food, community, and a safe place for kids, plus it is one of the largest provider of jobs for older teens, who are trained as counselors for the day camps.

Partner churches provide a week of food (lunch and snack) at one site plus organize and fund a Friday field trip. St. Mart/St Aug will provide a summer home for 65 elementary school students, as well as jobs for 10 counselors. Monday - Thursday we deliver and serve lunch, and Friday we will sponsor a field trip to Lands Sake, the Weston pool, and cook out for the kids.

PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING US A HAND! IT ONLY TAKES A FEW HOURS TO MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD! You can help in many ways: shop, prepare a lunch or snack (evening or AM), or help deliver the food.

And, if you cannot help that week, we need 2 to 3 volunteers to pick up a week's breakfast on a Thursday morning (10:00 AM) at a nearby Costco and deliver it.  And, if you can't participate, but want to support the program, $$ donations are much appreciated!!!
