CONFIRMATION

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 2, 8 of our young people will be confirmed by Bishop Tom Shaw.  At our 10:00 Am service this Sunday, I will present them with their confirmation certificates and a copy of the Book of Common Prayer.

The full name for Confirmation is the Apostolic Laying on of Hands, a title which draws our attention to the deeper meaning of the ceremony.

In the earliest years of the Christian community, household members of all ages were baptized together when they were moved to become part of the Christian faith community.  Over time, the practice of baptizing infant children separately became common, and the rite we call Confirmation was separated out as a time when the baptized children were of age to begin to take on adult responsibilities.  To say it is "apostolic" is to say that it dates back to the very origins of the church.  As the word "apostle" literally means "sent," it is also saying that our faith sends us out into the world to bear witness to the God in whom we live and move and have our being.

Confirmation is not the end of the faith journey in any sense.  Rather, it is the beginning of naming the faith story in our own lives.  Of course, no one arrives at a place of completion; yet again and again in the journey we call life, we brush up against the holy deep in the midst of all things.
Please join me in celebrating with these young adults and their families at this time in their faith lives.

-- Stephen
