The Resurection

The Resurrection, by Fra Angelico, 1400's
From the Rector......

HAVE YOU ANYTHING HERE TO EAT?

The Gospel reading this Sunday describes the disciples encountering their risen Lord as Luke's Gospel portrays it.  Jesus appears among them suddenly, as if he were a ghost; their response is fear, which Jesus acknowledges by saying "peace be with you" to them before any further words are spoken.  The passage continues by noting the wounds on Jesus' body and the surprising request for something to eat, concluding with Jesus "opening their minds" to understanding all that had occurred and instructing the disciples to go and bear witness to the story of Life out of death.

At one level, the struggle to identify just what Jesus is like in his resurrection body (as Paul later describes it) is evident.  He is not exactly the same as Jesus of Nazareth, their teacher and friend.  And he is not exactly a ghostly, other-worldly presence either.  What the theologian Marcus Borg calls "the post-Easter Jesus" is a unique blend of the two which defies easy description.

There is something "homey" and reassuring in envisioning Jesus as seeking to eat with his friends even as he assures them that God has acted in a new and decisive way in raising Jesus from the dead.  In our own time, it is (as the prayer of consecration puts it) "a good and joyful thing" to gather to eat with the Lord Jesus, at once the host of the feast and the life-giving feast itself.
