THE REST OF THE STORY
Earlier this year, Paul Harvey died. The famous Chicago-based radio newscaster had a style which intertwined story-telling, homespun philosophy and typically eccentric news items. He invariably included one item of news which seemed nonsensical or unbelievable. He would seem to have completed the report, but after a pause, he would say, "and now, the rest of the story," proceeding to provide the context necessary to understand the story's true meaning.
I thought of that phrase as I began reflecting on the Resurrection of Jesus, the Christ of God, which we celebrate on Easter Day. The event of the Resurrection proclaims God's eternal life-giving being. The story of the empty tomb, the Risen Christ and the joy which sent his followers into the world to share what had happened is wonderful. But its deepest, most powerful and most joyful meaning requires us, as Paul Harvey would say it, to know "the rest of the story."
The story of the Resurrection begins with human treachery, rejection and violence. It tells of friends abandoning their beloved leader and friend. It tells of loss, and hurt, and anger, and confusion, and fear. It tells of the abuse of power.
Resurrection is not an isolated action of God, unrelated to the ways of the world. The reason the Resurrection of Jesus Christ continues to speak to our deepest selves is that it is given to us despite all the ways in which we give in to the ways of the world instead of making choices which commend the faith that is in us. The self-centeredness of our hearts should result in a death which cannot be reversed. Nevertheless, God chooses life and reveals his choice of life again and again. And that, thanks be to God, is the rest of the story.
-- Stephen
