 Special Service Music, March 29 Bach's
famous Cantata BWV 131 St. Peter's is pleased to offer a complete performance of J.S. Bach's
famous "Cantata BWV 131:
Aus der Tiefe rufe ich, Herr, zu dir (From the deep, Lord, I Cried
to Thee)" Sunday, March 29. The cantata will be performed by the semi-professional
choir and collegium (chamber orchestra) during the 10:00 a.m. worship
service. There will be an encore presentation at 11:30 a.m. All are
invited to attend both the service and the subsequent performance.
The
cantata is one of J.S.Bach's most beautiful and enduring pieces. It
is scored for SATB soloists, chorus and orchestra and sets
Psalm 130 along with part of
Psalm 13 and the chorale Herr Jesu Christ,
du höchstes Gut. The soloists will be
Meredeth Kelly, soprano; Rebecca Saslow, alto; Evan Biela, tenor;
and Jonathan Cole, bass. The ensemble will be directed by Andrew
Shenton, Music Director at St. Peter's.
Director Andrew Shenton was born in England.
His first professional music training was at The Royal College of Music
in London, where he studied under a scholarship from The Royal College
of Organists. While at the RCM he read for a B.Mus. degree at London
University and was an organ scholar at St. Paul's Cathedral. In 1991
Andrew Shenton moved to the US to study for a Master's degree at the
Institute for Sacred Music, Worship and the Arts at Yale University
and then for a Ph.D. in musicology at Harvard University. He currently
serves on the faculty of Boston University.
The cantata will be performed twice (at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.)
so that people will be able to hear it both liturgically as part of
the Passion Sunday liturgy and then again in its entirety
