Bach's famous Cantata BWV 131
St. Peter's is pleased to offer a complete performance of J.S. Bach's famous "Cantata BWV 131: Aus der Tiefe rufe ich, Herr, zu dir (From the deep, Lord, I Cried to Thee)" Sunday, March 29. The cantata will be performed by the semi-professional choir and collegium (chamber orchestra) during the 10:00 a.m. worship service. There will be an encore presentation at 11:30 a.m. All are invited to attend both the service and the subsequent performance.

The cantata is one of J.S.Bach's most beautiful and enduring pieces. It is scored for SATB soloists, chorus and orchestra and sets Psalm 130 along with part of Psalm 13 and the chorale Herr Jesu Christ, du höchstes Gut. The soloists will be Meredeth Kelly, soprano; Rebecca Saslow, alto; Evan Biela, tenor; and Jonathan Cole, bass. The ensemble will be directed by Andrew Shenton, Music Director at St. Peter's.

Director Andrew Shenton was born in England. His first professional music training was at The Royal College of Music in London, where he studied under a scholarship from The Royal College of Organists. While at the RCM he read for a B.Mus. degree at London University and was an organ scholar at St. Paul's Cathedral. In 1991 Andrew Shenton moved to the US to study for a Master's degree at the Institute for Sacred Music, Worship and the Arts at Yale University and then for a Ph.D. in musicology at Harvard University. He currently serves on the faculty of Boston University.

The cantata will be performed twice (at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.) so that people will be able to hear it both liturgically as part of the Passion Sunday liturgy and then again in its entirety after the service.
