Jesus overturning the money changers' tables!
Jesus drives out the money changers!

From the Rector......

TIME
As I walked through the house to change the clocks after returning home on Sunday evening, I found myself thinking about the concept of time itself.  It isn't the first time my mind has wandered in that pathway.  As someone trained in the study of history before I entered theological study, I've been fascinated with the concept of time for, well,  a long time now.  At one level, time is a necessary construct by which society gathers those who need to be in the same place at the same time.  This aspect of time is essentially impersonal and structural, and we take it for granted.

But there are other senses of the word "time" which involve scientific, philosophical and /or theological elements.  In common speech, for example, we sometimes say that something will come to be "in God's good time."  Some experiences necessarily occur before or after others.  We are children before we are adults.  We must consume food and liquid within a certain period of time in order to remain alive.    As time passes, things which may at first have seemed eternal turn out to be subject to change.  What do we make of these senses of time?

Let me suggest one way of looking at it.  The passing of time is a reality of our material being, however we may choose to measure it.  But even as we live through the passage of time, we have moments in which we see meaning beyond, even despite, ordinary chronological time.  To say that God is eternal, for example,  is a theological way of saying that in the end, what we consider to be immutably structured "time" turns out to give way to that which is beyond the limitations of time, the eternity of God.

I think I changed all the clocks in the house, so it's back to the tasks at hand, to be addressed in a - you guessed it - timely manner!

UN choirMusic
Special Service Music
On Sunday, March 22, St. Peter's Episcopal Church will host a remarkable high-school choral group: the United Nations International School Chamber Ensemble.
This ensemble is made up of some two-dozen high-school students from around the world, who now attend the United Nations International School in New York City.  Their performance will be an integral part of the worship service on March 22, and will begin shortly before 10 AM.  St. Peter's would like to invite all members of the community to attend this very special event and encourages St. Peter's members to bring a friend.

Despite the youth of its members, the Chamber Ensemble has won considerable renown. The choir has previously toured Europe, where it performed in Stockholm, Hamburg and Berlin.  In New York City, the ensemble has sung at the Harvard Club, the United Nations General Assembly Hall, and many other locations. The choir studies and performs choral music of various cultures and styles, from the Renaissance Madrigal through 20th Century Jazz.

The ensemble's appearance at St. Peter's will kick off its spring concert tour of Massachusetts.  In addition to its appearance in Weston, the Chamber Ensemble will also sing at the French International School in Cambridge, and the German International School in Boston. Later, the Chamber Ensemble will perform with the Middlebury College Choir in New York.

On March 22, the Chamber Ensemble plans to sing selections from Mozart, Ralph Vaughan Williams, as well as such beloved spirituals as "Amazing Grace," and "Ride The Chariot."  People who attend the worship service will have an opportunity visit with members of the Chamber Ensemble during the informal fellowship that follows the service.  St. Peter's welcomes members of all faiths to attend what promises to be an enjoyable and inspiring service.

Bach Cantata BWV 131 with Choir and Collegium (Chamber Orchestra) at St. Peter's
On Sunday March 29, 2009, the semi-professional choir and Collegium (chamber orchestra) at St.Peter's Church in Weston, MA will give a complete performance of J. S. Bach's cantata BWV 131:Aus der Tiefe rufe ich, Herr, zu dir (From the deep, Lord, I Cried to Thee).

The cantata is one of Bach's most beautiful and enduring pieces. It is scored for SATB soloists, chorus and orchestra and sets Psalm 130 along with part of Psalm 13 and the chorale Herr Jesu Christ, du höchstes Gut. The soloists will be Meredith Kelly, soprano; Rebecca Saslow, alto; Evan Biela, tenor; and Jonathan Cole, bass. The ensemble will be directed by Andrew Shenton who recently took up the position as Director of Music at St. Peter's.

The cantata will be performed during the 10:00 AM Holy Communion and then performed again at 11:30 AM so that people will be able to hear it both liturgically as part of the Passion Sunday liturgy and then again in its entirety after the service. Church School
This week's lesson focuses on Psalm 19 which invites us to deepen our understanding of God's law and consider the ways we live as individuals and as the church.  The psalmist describes God's law as life-giving, beautiful wisdom, teaching us to live in positive relationship with God and with other people.

Also, just a reminder, children depart from the service following the children's message and gather for a children's comnmunion service before classes begin. Grades Pre-K and Kindergarten are in the room next to the nursery; grades 1-4 are in the downstairs classroom next to the Pre-K class; and grades 5-8 meet in the Bidwell Room. For further details, please contact.

The Middle School Youth Group
The Middle School Youth Group, under the creative inspiration of Joan Parrish and guiding force of Hall Kirkham, has a new mission project!  To develop relationship with the community of residents at Ruggles Street Assited Care Housing (the same organization St. Peter's supported a few years ago by furnishing rooms when the building opened.)

The MSYG went to meet with the residents last Sunday evening to explain the sports games played on the Wii system and have dessert.  (The intention is, if the residents liked the Wii, to pursue a grant to purchase one for them.  The residents could then play on it as part of their weekly activities but it would also be a source of entertainment for further visits by the Middle School.)

It was terrific.  Although many of the middle schoolers were a little reluctant, and we were warned not to expect too much from the residents, things could not have gone better. The Wii demonstration went very well, with many residents expressing interest and coming forward to try it out, which was very encouraging.

But the glory of the visit was dessert.  (Let me pause and praise Flora and Robin Booth for the fabulous quantity and variety of dessert-- for the adults who didn't come, here's an incentive to join next time!)

All of the kids served dessert to the residents and then sat down to eat their own dessert at the tables with them.  Students all joined in animated conversations with residents and really enjoyed the experience.   Everyone had a nice opportunity to get to know each other a little.  I think this is a very good sign for ongoing work.

The next step is for the MSYG to meet and write a proposal to the Outreach committee for funding to purchase a Wii for Ruggles Street, and we dare to hope, a new TV!

St Peters Rocks! Weston: will meet March 29 to begin our second module in our Matthew 25 journey, this time looking at those who are in prison and the system that places them there.  Brad Brockmann, an attorney from Massachusetts Correctional Legal Services and an EDS graduate, will meet with us to talk about the system of imprisonment as a form of punishment in the US and its impact on inmates, those who are released and their communities, as well as the ethical implications on the society that supports it.  This module will include, as our other module, a film component and practical, real-world application at later dates.  Questions, or can you attend?  Let me know!Hall Kirkham

PARENTSINTERESTED IN HOW ST PETERS CAN MINISTER TO ITS TEENS?  Amy Cook from the Diocese of Massachusetts will be here after the 10am service in the Bidwell Room on March 15 to talk with our Youth Ministry Team about issues surrounding youth ministry and some of her observations about how teens perceive church and faith.  She will also help us understand a bit more about the J2A curriculum introduced at our last meeting.  If you are a PARENT, NON-PARENT ADULT or a TEEN you are invited, so let Hall Kirkham know if you would like to join us!
