From the Rector......
 VALENTINE'S DAY
When we hear the word "valentine,"
we are likely to think of February 14, flowers, boxed chocolates, and
romance. Valentine's Day is one of those days which we may be
forgiven for understanding as a "hallmark" occasion - cards and
flowers expected.
Some of us may recall a time
when the day was called "St. Valentine's Day," because the date
has been observed as a Christian occasion at various times in history.
There were many early Christian martyrs named "Valentine."
Two of those martyrs were thought to have been martyred in February
- Valentine of Rome in 269 AD and Valentine of Terni during the Aurelian
persecution of 197 AD. Neither event seems to encourage the observance
with which we are familiar today. The connection with romantic
love appears to have come from a legendary account of Valentine of Rome.
The emperor wanted young military-aged men to remain unmarried.
Valentine was a priest who disobeyed this imperial edict and performed
marriages for many young men. He was eventually arrested and martyred
for his actions.
My natural tendency is to reclaim
the potential for spiritual meaning in notable days in our modern calendar.
Perhaps Valentine's Day is an exception - certainly the willingness
of a martyr to give his or her life for their faith is a deep kind of
love, but it is distant from the romantic expressions of love which
now connect with the day.
Happy Valentine's Day, and
let the flowers and chocolates fulfill their true vocation on February
14! -- Stephen
