Flower Guild - Christmas Flowers Please join us to decorate the church for Christmas Eve. Note this year we are working Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2 - 4 PM and our traditional time, Wed., Dec. 24, 9 - 11 AM. Please let me know if and when you plan to attend. Carolyn Ellis at cellis@stpetersweston.org.
Musical Notes This Sunday, the choir will offer the beloved spirituals "Rise up, shepherd, and follow" and "Go, tell it on the mountain" and, during communion, John Joubert's reflective setting (1954) of medieval text:
There is no rose of such virtue as is the rose that bare Jesu: Alleluia. For in this rose containèd was heav'n and earth in little space: Res miranda By that rose we may well see there be one God in Persons Three: Pares forma. Then leave we all this worldly mirth and follow we this joyous birth: Transeamus.
Movements from François Couperin le Grand's Mass for Convents comprise the organ prelude. Besides composing in several genres, he was organist to King Louis XIV at Versailles and at St. Gervais in Paris. By way of contrast, from a period nearly 300 years later, the postlude will be the Belgian composer Flor Peeter's jubilant Festival Voluntary, Op. 87.
Christmas Eve 3:00 pm: The Junior Choir will present "Sing Noel" by Natalie Sleeth, and John McDaniel will play a saxophone arrangement of "We Three Kings."
5:30 and 10:00 pm: The Choir will sing the following carols during the service:
"Cold December's winds were stilled"; trad. Catalan carol "Torches, torches, run with torches"; John Joubert (b. 1927) Coverdale's Carol (from Hodie); Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) "Lullay, my liking"; Gustav Holst (1874-1934) The shepherds' farewell (from L'enfance du Christ); Hector Berlioz (1803-69)
Trumpeter Evan Biela will accompany the hymn singing and play the postlude of carols.
At 10:00 pm, a half-hour of music will precede the service: In nativitatem Domini canticum; Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1634-1704) Excerpts from the Messiah; George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) Sinfonia And the glory of the Lord: chorus The people that walked in darkness: Jonathan Cole, bass-baritone O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion: Catherine Hedberg, mezzo-soprano, and chorus Pifa (Pastoral Symphony) He shall feed his flock: Kathleen Flynn, mezzo-soprano Come unto Him all ye that labour: Meredeth Kelly, soprano His yoke is easy, and his burthen is light: chorus
Accompanied by the Copley Chamber Players, the soloists include, besides our own Meredeth Kelly and Jonathan Cole, guest artists: Kathleen Flynn, newly arrived in Boston, has recently sung the role of Donna Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni in Castres, France; Schubert's Winterreise at the Festival in Ribadeo, Spain; and Handel's Messiah at Carnegie Hall. She has performed in venues such as Lincoln Center Theater, Juilliard Opera Theater, Alice Tully Hall, Chicago Opera Theater, National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Tanglewood, and with New York State Baroque.
Catherine Hedberg, who holds degrees from Boston University and the New England Conservatory of Music, is well known in the Boston area as soloist with the Cantata Singers, Musicians of the Old Post Road, and Exsultemus Period Ensemble, among others. Under the direction of Ton Koopman at Carnegie Hall, she sang in J. S. Bach's Cantata BWV 146. Her particular interest in Spanish song has led her to perform works of Iberian composers in the United States and Spain.
