Nominations:
In keeping with the theme of the upcoming week, it is almost "election" time at St. Peter's. While we do not elect our parish leadership like this week's event, the parish does vote for a single slate of leadership to begin after our Annual Meeting in late January. The Nominating Committee will soon begin considering future leadership. Years ago, I was asked to volunteer for a minor task for St. Peter's. Over extended and too busy was my response. The leader that called thanked me graciously and empathized with being overextended, and then asked, and I quote," but it's time for you to step up to the plate for the parish." Is it time for you to step up to the "St. Peter's plate"? Can you offer your time to serve on the vestry or become a committee co- chair?
Speaking for myself, I have received far more than I have given to our parish over the years. I hope everyone will prayerfully consider this possibility, and then contact your wardens or any member of the Nominations Committee with the good news of your contribution to the future of St. Peter's.

From the Rector's Desk:GIFTSHe's not one of the "red letter" saints, and what we know about him is almost certainly a mixture of fact and legend. He was a bishop sometime in the 5th century, serving in Myra, an ancient city located in what is now southern Turkey. Myra was a seaport town and had been visited by St. Paul on one of his journeys. As with any seaport, sailors came and went without ever having any real stake in the community. As the story goes, the good bishop tried to minister to these journeying folks by offering services of prayer for their safety on the sea and by giving them things they might need for the journey. His name was Nicholas, and as stories of his gift-giving kindness continued long after his death, he was honored in other countries and his name was pronounced in various ways. Centuries later, in Holland, it sounded something like "Santa Klaus." The rest of the story? Well, you know that part very well indeed! As we come to December 6th, the day the church calendar remembers Nicholas of Myra, let us be thankful for all the gifts which God gives us each and every hour of each and every day - seen and unseen, as the Creed puts it. And let us reflect on how we can become "gifts" for others by the decisions we make in our journey of life, as Nicholas did in his. The boat in which we travel includes us all.

Middle Schoolers
of St Peters Church!! Black
Nativity, 3:30pm Sunday,
December 14th, the holiday musical by Langston
Hughes... Presented by the National Center of Afro-American Artists.
Based on the Gospel
of St. Luke, combined with the poetry of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston
Hughes, Black Nativity is a celebration that tells the original story
of the Nativity in scripture, verse, music and dance.
A joyous company of
160 singers, actors, dancers and musicians delivers its powerful message
of joy, hope, victory and liberation.
Boston's production is the longest running performance of this song-play
in the world. The December 1st opening marks its 39th consecutive season
of 12 exhilarating performances.
This season's performances are dedicated to the memory of John Andrew
Ross (1940-2006) for his 36 years of service as Musical Director of
Black Nativity.
"If you've
never seen the gospel-infused 'Black Nativity,' clear your calendar
for a performance...The chorus has children as young as five performing
alongside parents and grandparents, and many of the singers debuted
in the production decades earlier as infants in the role of baby Jesus."

Musical Notes ~
For the second Sunday in Advent, the choir will sing Claude Goudimel's setting (1565) of Psalm 42 - "Comfort, comfort ye my people" - and a contemporary setting by Boris Ord of an anonymous 15th century text:
Adam lay ybounden, Bounden in a bond; Four thousand winter thought he not too long. And all was for an apple, An apple that he took, As clerkes finden written in their book. Ne had the apple taken been, the apple taken been, Ne had never our lady A been heavné queen. Blessed be the time that apple taken was, Therefore we moun singen, Deo gracias!
During communion, Jonathan Cole will sing the bass aria "Quia fecit mihi magna" from the Magnificat by Johann Sebastian Bach. This text from Mary is translated as follows: "For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name."
The prelude will be Bach's moving setting of the chorale "Savior of the nations, come!" (BWV 659) and the postlude, Samuel Sebastian Wesley's "Choral Song." Wesley (1810-1876) has been called "possibly the greatest [English] church musician between Purcell and Stanford."
Looking ahead to Christmas Eve at 10:00 pm, the choir, together with the Copley Chamber Players, and soloists Meredeth Kelly, Catherine Hedberg, and Jonathan Cole, will present portions of Handel's Messiah. Music during the service will include works by Charpentier, Holst, and Berlioz.
