Nominations:

In keeping with the theme of the upcoming week, it is almost "election" time at St. Peter's. While we do not elect our parish leadership like this week's event, the parish does vote for a single slate of leadership to begin after our Annual Meeting in late January. The Nominating Committee will soon begin considering future leadership. Years ago, I was asked to volunteer for a minor task for St. Peter's. Over extended and too busy was my response. The leader that called thanked me graciously and empathized with being overextended, and then asked, and I quote," but it's time for you to step up to the plate for the parish." Is it time for you to step up to the "St. Peter's plate"? Can you offer your time to serve on the vestry or become a committee co- chair?

Speaking for myself, I have received far more than I have given to our parish over the years. I hope everyone will prayerfully consider this possibility, and then contact your wardens or any member of the Nominations Committee with the good news of your contribution to the future of St. Peter's.

GIVING THANKS
Our Sunday morning worship is a time for giving thanks.  The ancient Greek word translates to "Eucharist," literally, "to give thanks."  Gratitude to God for all we are and all we have is the foundation upon which all our petitions are based.   In our country, the fourth Thursday of November is set aside as "the" Thanksgiving Day, and is generally observed by consuming a large meal and (at the risk of being too gender-specific) watching lots of football games on TV.

We have three opportunities to approach a day of thanksgiving differently.

This Sunday, November 16th, our Church School young people will be baking bread to be included in Thanksgiving baskets to be distributed later in the week.  Church School young people should go directly to the parish hall at 10:00 AM.  The Rev. Hall Kirkham will lead a youth communion service while others are worshipping in the church.

On Thursday, November 20th, all are invited to observe a fast during the day and then donate what would have been spent on food to Oxfam world relief as a sort of "alternative" Thanksgiving observance.  The day concludes with a simple meal at 6:00 PM in the parish followed by packing the Thanksgiving baskets.

Finally, on Monday, November 24th, all are welcome to take part in the Weston interfaith Thanksgiving service at 7:00 PM at First Parish.  The theme this year is the environment, and we will be ringing St. Peter's bell 350 times at the conclusion of the service - because 350 parts per million is the sustainable level of carbon dioxide for our atmosphere.  This is part of a world-wide observance summarized on the website 350.org.

I hope you will want to take part in these opportunities of engaging in thanksgiving for others, and then enjoy a wonderful family holiday on November 27th.

Stephen

Middle Schoolers of St Peters Church!!
Black Nativity
, 3:30pm Sunday, December 14th,
showing of the holiday musical by Langston Hughes...

Presented by the National Center of Afro-American Artists

saintsBased on the Gospel of St. Luke, combined with the poetry of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes, Black Nativity is a celebration that tells the original story of the Nativity in scripture, verse, music and dance.

A joyous company of 160 singers, actors, dancers and musicians delivers its powerful message of joy, hope, victory and liberation.

Boston's production is the longest running performance of this song-play in the world. The December 1st opening marks its 39th consecutive season of 12 exhilarating performances.

This season's performances are dedicated to the memory of John Andrew Ross (1940-2006) for his 36 years of service as Musical Director of Black Nativity.

"If you've never seen the gospel-infused 'Black Nativity,' clear your calendar for a performance...The chorus has children as young as five performing alongside parents and grandparents, and many of the singers debuted in the production decades earlier as infants in the role of baby Jesus."  Copyright 2007 Globe Newspaper Company

We will gather at St Peter's at 2:00pm, drive downtown to catch the 3:30pm show, and then have time for discussion and dinner.
Our hope is to have folks ready for pick-up at the Parish Hall by 8:00pm afterwards.

Outreach

Thanksgiving Baskets and OxFam Fast and fundraiser Thursday, November 20: This year we will again be preparing Thanksgiving Baskets for needy families in Waltham, working with members of Christ Church, Waltham, in this traditional outreach project. A number of you have already indicated interest in participating, and we invite more of you to participate. Please let us know if you are interested, and/or if you or a group of you would like to prepare breads, pies, etc. to go into the baskets. Please contact Judy Campos or any other member of your Outreach committee for more information. And, thanks to those who have already volunteered to participate!

Please also join us in celebrating a fast in support of OxFam (www.oxfamamerica.org). As we enter the Thanksgiving season, it is important that we remember those less fortunate. The task is simple: skip a meal or two (or a favorite part of a meal) to remember the more than 850 million people who are hungry. Then come to St. Peter's for a simple meal to break the fast, and contribute the money you saved to OxFam. After the meal we will prepare the baskets.

Volunteers needed for tutoring. St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in the Boston South End runs a highly successful after school program for inner city children of all ages. One of the programs, called Academic Nights, helps tutor teens in various subjects (biology, math, pre-calculus, Spanish, English, history, physics, statistics) and needs additional tutors. Academic nights meets Wednesdays, 6:00 - 7:30 PM. If you would like to help, or want more information, contact Ron Corley (rbcorley@...). You will enjoy doing this!
Music This Week

On November 16th, "St. Anne," the tune name for "O God, our help in ages past," will be sung both as a congregational hymn and as part of Ralph Vaughan Williams' familiar anthem, "O how amiable are thy dwellings." One of his hymns which has become a staple of the repertory is "Come down, O Love divine," named "Down Ampney" in honor of his birthplace in Gloucestershire.  The section leaders will perform Gabriel Fauré's lovely "Cantique de Jean Racine," whose text by the French playwright Jean Racine (1639-99) is translated as follows:

O Redeemer divine, our sole hope of salvation, Eternal Light of the earth and the sky, we kneel in adoration.  O Savior, turn on us Thy loving eye!

Send down on us the fire of Thy grace all-consuming, whose wondrous might dispersed the powers of hell; and rouse our slumbering souls with Thy radiance, that they may waken Thy mercy to tell!

O Christ bestow Thy blessing on us, we implore Thee, who here are gathered on penitent knee.  Accept the hymns we chant to Thine eternal glory and these Thy gifts we return unto Thee!

The organ music will comprise the Andante from Concerto I, Op. 4 by George Frideric Handel and a "Festal Flourish" by the twentieth-century British composer Gordon Jacob.

Advent Quiet Day
'Only God can say what this new spirit gradually forming within you will be.'
      - Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

How, in this all too frantic season, can we learn to still the mind and quiet the body as we journey toward the Incarnation?

Join us for a morning of quiet and prayerful reflection as we explore together ways in which we can open more deeply to the presence of Christ who holds and grounds us in the 'already/not yet' Kingdom of God.

We hope you will contact one of us if you are interested in joining our group of up to twelve.

Date: Saturday, December 13
Time: 9-12
Place: Bidwell Room
Co-facilitators: The Reverend Hall Kirkham, associate rector at St. Peter's Church (hkirkham@stpetersweston.org), and Sarah Rossiter, lay spiritual director, and retreat leader (sarahrossiter42@yahoo.com).
