From the Rector's Desk
FOR ALL THE SAINTS Beginning in the fourth century, one Sunday in the year has been set aside to acknowledge the faithfulness of saints who do not have their own "name days" during the church year. Eventually, November 1 became the settled date, and November 2 became known as All Souls Day, recognizing that the ultimate mystery of God's creative action names all human life. In our own day, we observe All Saints on the Sunday following November 1 so that as many of the congregation as possible may be present.
It is among the best liturgical opportunities in the church year to give thanks to God for all those whose love has sustained us. We also recall those whom we do not know by name, yet whose name of "saint" identifies the ways in which they bore witness to God's love during their earthly lives. All Saints Day reminds us that the word "saint" simply means "sanctified" - those proclaimed whole ("holy") by baptism into the life, death, ministry and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Saints are not only those remembered in stained glass. Saints are among us our whole lives long, known and unknown alike.

BY WHOM THE BELL TOLLS? BY ST PETER'S 6th - 12th GRADERS! The Interfaith Thanksgiving Service this year is Monday, November 24. We want to raise awareness that CO2 levels of 350 parts per million will JUST provide sustainable air on our planet home. We are not there yet, and so we need strong folks to help us ring St Peter's bell 350 times starting at 7:45pm on Monday, November 24! We'll attend the service, which starts at 7pm, then run over at 7:30 to St Peters bell tower and, at 7:45pm, start ringing. ARE YOU READY? I need to know who can help!! Peace and bells - Hall ST PETER'S ROCKS! WESTON on Sunday night, November 23, where we the Rocks of St Peters and the Confirmation Class will meet Kathy McAdams from Ecclesia Ministries in to talk to us about homelessness. Come for the parish dinner at 6pm, then we'll head off at around 7pm for Kathy's great and powerful presentation to help us prepare for our outreach to the homeless population this winter. Contact Hall for more details!

Outreach
NEXT OUTREACH MEETING Sunday, November 2, following the service. Anyone with an interest in Outreach is invited and encouraged to attend; grab a coffee and come to the Bidwell Room!
Thanksgiving Baskets and OxFam Fast and fundraiser Thursday, November 20: This year we will again be preparing Thanksgiving Baskets for needy families in Waltham, working with members of Christ Church, Waltham, in this traditional outreach project. A number of you have already indicated interest in participating, and we invite more of you to participate. Please let us know if you are interested, and/or if you or a group of you would like to prepare breads, pies, etc. to go into the baskets. Please contact Judy Campos or any other member of your Outreach committee for more information. And, thanks to those who have already volunteered to participate!
Please also join us in celebrating a fast in support of OxFam (www.oxfamamerica.org). As we enter the Thanksgiving season, it is important that we remember those less fortunate. The task is simple: skip a meal or two (or a favorite part of a meal) to remember the more than 850 million people who are hungry. Then come to St. Peter's for a simple meal to break the fast, and contribute the money you saved to OxFam. After the meal we will prepare the baskets.
Volunteers needed for tutoring. St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in the Boston South End runs a highly successful after school program for inner city children of all ages. One of the programs, called Academic Nights, helps tutor teens in various subjects (biology, math, pre-calculus, Spanish, English, history, physics, statistics) and needs additional tutors. Academic nights meets Wednesdays, 6:00 - 7:30 PM. If you would like to help, or want more information, contact Ron Corley (rbcorley@...). You will enjoy doing this!

Music This Week
On November 2nd, we shall celebrate All Saints Day by singing two hymns associated with this festival: Ralph Vaughan Williams' "For all the saints," composed for the English Hymnal (1906) and justifiably called one of the greatest twentieth-century hymns; and John Henry Hopkins' setting of Lesbia Scott's "I sing a song of the saints of God" from a hymn collection (published in 1929) which she wrote for her own three children, observing: "Most of them came in response to the children's own demands. 'Make a hymn for a picnic.' 'Make a hymn for a foggy day,' and the one in your book was meant for use on Saints' days, to impress the fact that sainthood is a living possibility today." "For all the saints" will be heard a second time when the choir presents Robert Shaw's arrangement of this hymntune.
In keeping with the theme of the day, the choir will also sing the Offertory from Gabriel Fauré's celebrated Requiem with solo sections sung by Rebecca Saslow, Evan Biela, and Jonathan Wimpy. We look forward to hearing a presentation by the children's choir as well.
The organ music includes the Allegretto from Sonata IV by Felix Mendelssohn and the Grand choeur by Joseph Jongen, nowadays regarded as a leading figure in Belgian music in the first half of the 20th century.

Nominations:
In keeping with the theme of the upcoming week, it is almost "election" time at St. Peter's. While we do not elect our parish leadership like this week's event, the parish does vote for a single slate of leadership to begin after our Annual Meeting in late January. The Nominating Committee will soon begin considering future leadership. Years ago, I was asked to volunteer for a minor task for St. Peter's. Over extended and too busy was my response. The leader that called thanked me graciously and empathized with being overextended, and then asked, and I quote," but it's time for you to step up to the plate for the parish." Is it time for you to step up to the "St. Peter's plate"? Can you offer your time to serve on the vestry or become a committee co- chair?
Speaking for myself, I have received far more than I have given to our parish over the years. I hope everyone will prayerfully consider this possibility, and then contact your wardens or any member of the Nominations Committee with the good news of your contribution to the future of St. Peter's.
