From the Rector's Desk

NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR TO BEGIN JANUARY 1, 2009

I am delighted to announce that Andrew Shenton will become our Music Director at the beginning of the new year.

Andrew Shenton was born in England.  His first professional training was at The Royal College of Music in London, where he read for a B.Mus. degree at London University and was an organ scholar at St. Paul's Cathedral.  In 1991, he moved to the U.S. to study at the institute for Sacred Music at Yale University and then for a Ph.D. in musicology at Harvard University.  Andrew has a Master's degree in organ performance from Yale, and holds the Fellowship Diploma of the Royal College of Organists.  He has toured extensively in Europe and the U.S. as a conductor, recitalist and clinician, and his two solo organ recordings have received international acclaim.

Andrew has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards including a Harvard Merit Fellowship, and Harvard's Certificate of Distinction in Teacher.  A former Director of Music at Trinity Episcopal Church in Princeton, NJ, Andrew has wide and varied experience as a church musician.  He has worked for the Royal School of Church Music and the American Guild of Organists at the local and national levels and has commissioned and premiered more than forty pieces including anthems by Joe Utterback and John Tavener.
He is currently a member of the faculty at Boston University where he directs the Master of Sacred Music program and the Messiaen Project.  He is editor of the online journal and website www.oliviermessiaen.net and his first book Olivier Messiaen's System of Signs was published by Ashgate in the spring of 2008.

I know you will want to  join me in offering him a warm welcome as he becomes part of our parish staff at the beginning of the year.

CHRISTMAS MUSIC

I am pleased to announce that our interim Music Director, Beverly Scheibert, will be with us through the end of December, playing the Christmas Eve services and the Service of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December 28th.  It is a joy to have Beverly with us during the interim period, and I know you join me in thanking her for her musical leadership and for helping us in the transition process.

Stephen

Thanksgiving Baskets and OxFam Fast and fundraiser Thursday, November 20: This year we will again be preparing Thanksgiving Baskets for needy families in Waltham. A number of you have already indicated interest in participating, and we invite more of you to participate. Please let us know if you are interested, and/or if you or a group of you would like to prepare breads, pies, etc. to go into the baskets. Please contact Judy Campos (judy.campos@comcast.net) or any other member of your Outreach committee for more information. And, thanks to those who have already volunteered to participate!

Please also join us in celebrating a fast in support of OxFam (www.oxfamamerica.org). As we enter the Thanksgiving season, it is important that we remember those less fortunate. The task is simple: skip a meal or two (or a favorite part of a meal) to remember the more than 850 million people who are hungry. Then come to St. Peter's for a simple meal to break the fast, and contribute the money you saved to OxFam. After the meal we will prepare the baskets.

More information will follow.
