CONFIRMATION

I am currently forming this year's confirmation class, to have its first meeting on Sunday, October 19th,  5:30 PM  - 7:30 PM at the Rectory, 1 Colpitts Road. Our current practice at St. Peter's is to invite all 8th graders to these classes to prepare for confirmation in the spring.  (Young people older than 8th grade who are not yet confirmed are also welcome to join the class.)

Confirmation is technically referred to in the Book of Common Prayer as "the Laying on of Hands."  The sacramental "moment" in the liturgy comes when the bishop (representing the unity of the Church in the sense of our connection to people of faith throughout the world) "lays hands" upon the candidate, saying, "Strengthen, O Lord, your servant  name  with your Holy Spirit; empower him/her for your service; and sustain her/him all the days of his/her life."

It is a ceremonial moment meant to symbolize the transition from being a child whose formation in the faith is primarily the responsibility of family and the adult community to emerging into adult responsibilities.  Although it is tempting to see Confirmation as essentially "graduation from Sunday School," it is instead the "commencement" of a life-long journey of faith.  It is an exciting and promising moment in young adult formation. Please contact me for further details about this year's class.

Worship Service Notes for 10:00 AM on October 12th
This week's 10:00 service is a special activity day for Church School .  Church School students will be departing the service following the Children's Message for a special youth communion service and activity in the parish hall, led by The Rev. Hall Kirkham.  The worship service in the church will include all appointed scripture lessons, and the adult sermon following the departure of the Church School students.  The intention is to offer a "breather" for the Church School teachers as well as  a special opportunity for the Church School students and a relatively distraction-free worship opportunity for parents and adult parishioners.

Adult Bible Study
Adult Bible Study meets each Sunday at 9:00 a.m.  in the Bidwell Room. On October 19th, the Rector will lead a conversation on Matthew 22:34-46.
Please join the Drop-In Discussion Group as we come together again to review and comment on two books -   Gift of the Red Bird by Paula D'Arcy and The Snow Goose by Paul Gallico. We will meet this Wed. at 9:30 in the Bidwell Room.

Pommern Village Choir
This Thursday at 7 p.m., Episcopal Divinity School is hosting a program by the Pommern Village Choir from Tanzania. Our choir will join them, together with the EDS Singers. This is a cross-cultural, musical experience not to be missed. The EDS Chapel is located at 99 Brattle Street, Cambridge

St. Peter's Rocks!
Weston again on October 19 form 5:30-7:30 in the Parish Hall. Come one and all 9-12 graders for an exciting and informative conversation about class, privilege and social location led by special guest Nancy DiGiovanni of the Unitarian Universalist church!

Confirmation Class
Confirmation Class is now forming to prepare 8th graders for confirmation in the spring of 2009. The first meeting is Sunday, October 19th, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Rectory, 1 Colpitts Road, Weston. If you have not already done so, please let the Rector know if a member of your household will be preparing for confirmation this year.

Music This Week
This Sunday, October 12th, the choir will offer Gordon Jacob's classic arrangement of the hymntune known as Brother James's Air, a setting of Psalm 23.  Rebecca Sasgordon jacob Two of the four hymns may be unfamiliar to some of us, but both are stirring melodies that are easily learned.  Hymn 515, "Holy Ghost, dispel our sadness," was written in 1940 by George Henry Day, organist/choirmaster of Trinity Church in Geneva, New York, from which the hymn takes its name of "Geneva."  Hymn 417, "This is the feast of victory for our God," is a jubilant setting written in 1969 by Richard Hillert.  Originating in Lutheran circles, it won acceptance in our hymnal.  The Psalm-Prelude, Op. 32, No. 2, inspired by Psalm 37, verse 11, by the English composer Herbert Howells (1921) comprises the organ prelude, while the postlude is drawn from the German composer Hermann Schroeder's low, mezzo-soprano, will sing "Father of heaven," an aria from George Frideric Handel's oratorio Judas Maccabaeus.  Kleine Praeludien und Intermezzi (1932).

On Thursday, October 16th at 7:00 pm, our choir will join with the Episcopal Divinity School Singers and a choir from Tanzania in a Music Festival of Psalm 23 at St. John's Chapel on the EDS campus.  The Pommern Village choir, which is touring extensively in Massachusetts, is described as follows: "Imagine you are sitting next to a small red brick church in the Tanzanian sun.  A group of villagers, some holding infants, others holding drums, rattles, reed shakers, and other ancient rhythm instruments, produce Swahili sounds which slowly but surely capture your sensibilities.  This is a cross-cultural, musical experience not to be missed!"  Donations will support the drilling of wells and provision of fresh water in Pommern and surrounding villages.
