Pastoral Care
Pastoral
care of parishioners - by both fellow parishioners and by clergy - is
of the highest priority. Several parishioners have had critical medical
needs in the past few weeks, and it is very helpful to the clergy for
others to tell us when they know there is a need. In the rush of
addressing a crisis, family members don't always think to call the
church office and hospitals no longer make calls informing us of
admissions. Please, let us know of needs - even if you think we already
know! - so we can respond as promptly as possible! To contact Stephen at any time, please call 781-899-3071 or email to

From the Rector's Desk
10:00 AM SUNDAY SERVICE
I am grateful to everyone for
the patience with which you have been addressing the implications of
the change in the Sunday 10:00 AM Service patterns during this first
month. I have appreciated the feedback and suggestions which you
have given me and other parish leaders.
The one most common concern
is to be sure that the first portion of the service (when children are
in church with their families) is as time-sensitive as possible, while
retaining its essential elements as indicated in the Book of Common
Prayer. To that end, I'm going to "try on" some adjustments.
The most obvious of the adjustments
is choosing to read either the Hebrew Scripture lesson or the Epistle
(but not both) at a given 10:00 AM Sunday service. Some of you
may remember (as I do) when only the Epistle was read at the service
of Holy Communion. While there are certainly benefits to hearing
both the Hebrew Scripture and the Epistle readings, I want to return
to that older pattern and see how it feels to us. The preacher
for a given Sunday will select whether we read the Hebrew Scripture
or the Epistle, depending upon which may be more thematically appropriate
to the sermon. The assigned reading from the Gospels is of course
always included.
Please note
that both lessons will be read at the 8:00 AM service every Sunday.
Together with singing no more
than three verses of an opening and a sequence hymn and encouraging
brief announcements which refer to the Sunday bulletin, Keys Newsletter,
and the parish website for details, I will be striving to retain the
essentials of our worship while responding to the understandable concern
about the best use of our time at worship.Stephen

Music This Week
This Sunday, the choir will
present a portion of Henry Purcell's late 17th century
verse anthem, "Sing unto the Lord, " which is based on Psalm 96;
and, in a contrasting mood, a lovely modern motet with music by Arthur
Baynon and text by Joseph Campbell:
When rooks fly homeward
and shadows fall,
When
roses fold on the hay-yard wall,
When
blind moths flutter by door and tree.
Then
comes the quiet of Christ to me.
The organ selections will be
Ralph Vaughan Williams' reflective setting of the Welsh hymntune "Rhosymedre,"
and the Praeludium, Fuga and Ciacona in C by the Danish composer Dieterich
Buxtehude (1637-1707).
We welcome as our new bass
section leader Jonathan Wimpy, who has just arrived in Boston to pursue
a master's degree in voice at Boston University. He holds a
bachelor's degree in voice from Baylor University and has extensive
experience as a soloist in both church music (including St. Paul's
Episcopal Church in Waco, Texas) and opera.
On Thursday, October 16th
at 7:00 pm, the Episcopal Divinity School near Harvard Square is hosting
a program by the Pommern Village Choir from Tanzania, which is touring
widely in Massachusetts. Our choir has been invited to join them
that evening, together with the EDS Singers, and we will sing two settings
of Psalm 23 alone. As the preliminary publicity states: "This
is a cross-cultural, musical experience not to be missed!"

St. Peter's Rocks Weston
'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' And
the king will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one
of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.' (Matthew 25.37-40)
Teens, come to a PARTY from 5:30 to 7:30pm, this Sunday Night (September 28) at the Parish Hall!! We'll meet each other, have a party (music, stuff to eat and drink, a game or
two), and conversation about our ideas for rocking St Peter's this year
by living and doing Jesus' Gospel of love, compassion, radical
acceptance, and service. Peace and love,
Hall
(hkirkham@stpetersweston.org)
PS: TO THE CONGREGATION AS A WHOLE. . .
My dedication to helping St Peter's
Church meet the pastoral needs of its congregation is great, and will
grow I am sure as I get to know the members of this exceptional family,
wherever they are physically, theologically or spiritually. I
am here at the church regularly Sunday through Thursday, and can come
out to meet with you then or at a time that we are able to plan together.
