Summer hours: The church office is opened Tuesday - Friday, 9-3. Stephen is also
available on Monday's at the Rectory office (781-899-3071) or by email (sovoysey@comcast.net).
Pastoral Care: Pastoral
care of parishioners - by both fellow parishioners and by clergy - is
of the highest priority. Several parishioners have had critical medical
needs in the past few weeks, and it is very helpful to the clergy for
others to tell us when they know there is a need. In the rush of
addressing a crisis, family members don't always think to call the
church office and hospitals no longer make calls informing us of
admissions. Please, let us know of needs - even if you think we already
know! - so we can respond as promptly as possible! eKeys Archive: If you missed an earlier eKeys newsletter and would like to see it, please |

From the Assistant Rector's Desk
Greetings from the church this summer's
week! Writing thoughts and meditations in publications like this
is new to me, and I welcome both the invitation from Stephen and the
feedback from all.
A week ago I ventured into reading
the lecture offered (from Russia) by Alexander Solzhenitsyn in accepting
the 1970 Nobel Prize for literature. It's actually quite readable,
and short, which for me is nice! He talks about literature, of
course, but reminds us also that - in this world of near-instantaneous
communication of the disasters, miracles, tragedies and celebrations
experienced by humanity world wide - we continue really to respond
only to what is closest to home. "Everything distant which does
not threaten to come rolling up to our threshold today we consider,
in general, endurable and of tolerable dimensions." This observation
from 1970 is still probably relevant today. And I think that events
in the dim recesses of time, events that the study of history lets us
grasp, are one of the "distant" things he is talking about.
On Wednesday, August 20th we Anglicans remembered Bernard,
the Cistercian monk who founded the monastery at Clarirvaux in 1115
CE. Cistercian monks are a reformed order of Benedictine monks,
therefore more strict in their rule of life, and Bernard was no exception.
He was a powerful preacher and a strict adherent to the Church's doctrines
and prerogatives. It is claimed that his ardor was so great for
building this community that he denied himself sleep for 10 years following
its establishment in order to write letters and sermons as its Abbott.
His ardor was also great enough to have him preach passionately in support
of the Second Crusade, to transformative effect in a Europe still reeling
from the first one. This, then, is an opportunity to remember
not just Bernard but the Crusades, not just the power of passionate
and persuasive belief but its destructive potential, and to be mindful
ourselves about where history is guiding us, and vigilant about what
may even "roll up to our threshold."
Bernard is also credited with writing
a hymn that's become a favorite of mine, not necessarily for its theology
but for the arrangement I've heard of it by a band called The Innocence
Mission.
O sacred head, surrounded by crown of piercing thorn! O bleeding head, so wounded, reviled and put to scorn! Our sins have marred the glory of thy most holy face, yet angel hosts adore thee and tremble as they gaze.
I see thy strength and vigor all fading in the strife, and death with cruel rigor, bereaving thee of life; O agony and dying! O love to sinners free! Jesus, all grace supplying, O turn thy face on me.
In this thy bitter passion, Good Shepherd, think of me with thy most sweet compassion, unworthy though I be: beneath thy cross abiding for ever would I rest, in thy dear love confiding, and with thy presence blest. for ever would I rest, in thy dear love confiding, and with thy presence blest.

Announcments Welcome New Staff Members!
We welcome two new staff members as
we begin the new academic year:
Beverly Scheibert
is now our Interim Music Director. Ms. Scheibert has served as
music director at Christ Church, Cambridge and at St. Peter's Church,
Westborough, and brings a wide variety of musical leadership experiences
with her. Beverly will be with us during our search process for
a permanent appointment. The Adult Choir returns Sunday, September
7th and the first choir rehearsal is this Thursday, September
4th at 7:30 PM in the music room (third floor of the parish
hall). All interested volunteer singers are welcome!
Elizabeth (Beth) Graham
is now our Church School Coordinator. Beth brings a lifetime of
church experience as the daughter of an Episcopal priest and her professional
abilities as an MSW to this responsibility. She will be a core
teacher for the middle school class and provide needed support for our
outstanding volunteer teaching teams.
Sunday Bible Study
The Sunday morning bible study group
resumes on Sunday, September 7th at 9:00 AM in the Bidwell Room.
The conversation each Sunday focuses on the gospel reading for the upcoming
Sunday. Join us after the 8:00 AM service or before the 10:00
AM service for this time of biblical study and fellowship.
September Celebration
Our academic year kicks off once again
with a celebratory service and parish-wide picnic following the 10:00
AM service on September 7th. Please watch for an important
mailing with Sunday details and information from Assistant Rector Hall
Kirkham about the new youth group (St. Peter's Rocks!).

NO MORE CHURCH SCHOOL IN THE PARISH HALL!
It has been a goal of our church leadership to focus on the needs of our
church school and youth families- the children and their parents who spend much
time as teachers. Space dedicated to use as church school classrooms has been
the focus of this summer's renovation.
The biggest change was made to the nursery and preschool area. This space
was significantly renovated, thanks to the hard work of Julie Panagakos and
Harry Goodale (our property manager). Please have a look when you can.
The third floor is now home to the remaining elementary grade church school
classes and the Bidwell Room will be used by grades 6-8. Plans for a space for
teens are now underway.
In addition, take a moment to look at our lovely gardens. Numerous gardeners
have beautified these areas. Special thanks to Carolyn Ellis and John
Bulbrook, and their team of volunteers.
Our renovation work is not quite finished, so please be cautious in the
nursery/young children space.
ACTION ITEM: We need gently used
items for our nursery:
Two rocking chairs are in need of cushions/pads
Changing table
Two porta cribs. If you can help, please call or
email the church office.

St. Peter's Church School Registration; Nursery Information
September 7th begins a new Church School year, and we have three
beautiful new classrooms in the parish hall! To help us determine
where we should locate each class, we need some basic information from
Church School parents. Please let us know if your child/children will
attend (even if sporadically) church school or the nursery.
Simply respond to Peggy Batchelder at rdbatchelder@comcast.net with the following three items:
> child's name
> grade (or age/birthday if not yet in kindergarten)
> preferred email (if different from the one used to respond to this message)
Note: This year we will have two nursery rooms: one for children
2 and under, and one for 3 and 4 year olds. The 3 and 4 year olds will
have the choice of staying in the nursery during the entire worship
service, or joining their parents in church at the start of the service
then moving downstairs when the church school children go to their
classrooms after Communion.

Come Sing!
The
choir season begins with rehearsal on Thursday, September 4th, from
7:30-9:00 pm. St. Peter's must have many members who at some point
have sung in a choir, or in a school, university, or community chorus -
or who have had some other form of musical experience. Dust off your
talents and join us! All ages are welcome, from high school upward.
Many thanks,
Beverly Scheibert
Interim Music Director
