Announcements
Summer hours: The church office is opened Tuesday - Friday, 9-3. Stephen is also
available on Monday's at the Rectory office (781-899-3071) or by email (sovoysey@comcast.net). Building Work: There are
several projects planned around the buildings this summer and fall,
especially the freshening and upgrading of church school space on the
lower level of the parish hall. Several parishioners are at work with
our building manager, Harry Goodale, and appropriate subcontractors to
do the needed work as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Apologies in advance for any inconveniences you may encounter while
this work is being done.
Pastoral Care: Pastoral
care of parishioners - by both fellow parishioners and by clergy - is
of the highest priority. Several parishioners have had critical medical
needs in the past few weeks, and it is very helpful to the clergy for
others to tell us when they know there is a need. In the rush of
addressing a crisis, family members don't always think to call the
church office and hospitals no longer make calls informing us of
admissions. Please, let us know of needs - even if you think we already
know! - so we can respond as promptly as possible! eKeys Archive: If you missed an earlier eKeys newsletter and would like to see it, please |

. . . from the Rectors Desk
THE NAME OF GOD
When Moses was called by God
to deliver the Covenant people out of bondage in Egypt, he asked what
he should say to the people if they asked what God's name is.
It seems an odd request, but in the early chapters of the Book of Exodus,
it turns out to be an important matter indeed. In Hebrew thought,
the name of something defined that thing and implied human ability to
define it. How God should be "named" was an important philosophical
matter. The English translation of the Hebrew name is usually
rendered as "I am who I am." It seems to be a tautology which
reveals little. However, in Hebrew usage, it carries extraordinarily
deep and unlimited meaning.
It means "I have always been
who I have always been," recalling God's continual desire to offer
lovingkindness to all God has created, even in the face of human obstinancy.
It means "I am this day who I am," recalling God's immediate presence
in giving life in our own moment in time. It means "I will always
be who I am becoming," recalling the fact that God's life-giving
acts continue beyond the time within which we as finite creatures must
live our earthly lives.
It is a name which cannot capture
the fullness of what it describes, preserving and proclaiming the theological
truth that God's name is utterly unique and calls us to gratitude
above all else. It is the name above all other names.

Flower Guild -- Walk in our Memorial Garden
On Sunday, August 24 following the 10 AM worship, we invite you to stop by the Memorial Garden outside our chapel. Bring your iced tea, and let's hope we have clear skies! Many thanks to Shannon Hartmann and others who have weeded and pruned. And of course, we invite you to stop by anytime, and we welcome perennials you may want to share as you work in your gardens this fall.
Many thanks also to our Flower Guild members who have arranged for summer flowers, including Flora Booth, Chay Veeder, Priscilla Hindmarsh, Becky Callow, Didi Burgess. I will soon be setting up the monthly assignments for 2008-2009, so if you would like to be part of this Flower Guild effort, do let me know.

Spiritual Incident
I had a moving experience recently and would like to share
it:
On June 25 l was lying on a gurney in pre-op, waiting to have an
operation on my spine--a delicate procedure at best, and a time of
apprehension for me. I started thinking of the people who I knew were
praying for me, when suddenly God was with me. His presence was
palpable and I was moved to tears. A moment later, now at peace, I was
off.
Later, I thought of all the times during my hospital ministry when I
told patients that they were in the loving arms of Christ, and now I could tell
them that he came to comfort me--and let me know he was there! It is
powerful stuff.

News from El Hogar
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we helped with the dormitory project by moving a huge pile of cinder blocks, screening sand, and mixing concrete, all by person-power. We de-nailed three large piles of lumber salvaged from two wooden structures, sorted the boards, and carried them to a lower field. See the beautiful mountains in the distance.
On Thursday morning, we toured the Agricultural School, learning about the crops they grow and animals they raise.Members of our team assist the men constructing the two-story concrete-block dorm by screening sand for use in mortar and concrete beams. With shovels we tossed the sand up through the upright mesh screen.
