. . . from the Rectors Desk
MISSION
In 1835, what was then
known as the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States was
recovering from nearly two generations of extraordinary challenges.
During the Revolutionary Way, the vast majority of Anglicans were
Tories who staunchly opposed any thought of independence from the
British Crown. During the war, many Anglican church buildings were
used as barracks, field hospitals and even stables for officers'
horses. After the war, many abandoned the newly emerging United
States and resettled in Canada or elsewhere in the British Empire.
Clergy were minimally trained and few in number. The financial
support for the church was anemic.
The General Convention
of 1835 could have spent its time bemoaning the problems and sharing
their frustrations with each other. Instead, it took two essential
steps. It provided funds for a missionary bishop to lead the church
in expanding into what was then referred to as the great northwest.
Jackson Kemper was appointed to this daunting post, and through his
boundless energy and endless travels, the church was established in
what are now the states of Missouri, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa,
Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska and Kansas. It also formally
declared that all members of the church belonged to the Domestic and
Foreign Missionary Society of the Episcopal Church, thus recognizing
that the ministry of the baptized is essential to the renewal of the
church. Today, nearly 175 years
later, the church also faces many challenges, and could spend its
time bemoaning the problems. Or we could take our cue from those of
long ago who chose to deepen our commitment and move forward with
well-prepared leaders.
Jackson Kemper died on
May 24, 1870 and is remembered by the unofficial title, "The
Bishop of the Whole Northwest." I wonder what would happen if
every member of the church today chose to live out the baptismal
promises in the deepest possible way.

Outreach Update
B-SAFE Program, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, June 30-July 03
This summer, St. Peter's will serve as a partner church for one week as part of a larger effort of the Episcopal Diocese to serve over 350 children and teens at 6 sites in the Boston area in a six week summer day camp. The B-SAFE program provides academic enrichment, sports, field trips, good food, community, and a safe place for kids, plus jobs for older teens. Last summer, over 40 parishioners participated in a week-long sponsorship of B-SAFE, and it was a wonderful, enriching experience. Partner churches provide a week of food (lunch and snack) at one site plus organize and fund a field trip on the last day of the week (which will be Thursday, July 3). St. Stephens will provide for 60 middle school students, and jobs for 10 counselors. Please help make this program a success, while investing in the lives of youth, and give some time. Contact Ron Corley or call me at 617 512-9610 to volunteer of get more information.
PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING US A HAND! IT ONLY TAKES A FEW HOURS TO MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE! You can help shop, prepare a lunch or snack (evening or AM), help deliver and serve the food, or help on the field trip. Book Collection for the Lawrence Family Development Charter School in Lawrence, MA Carter Hulings, a sophomore at Weston High School, is in the process of becoming an Eagle scout in Weston's Troop 153. As part of his Eagle project, he is holding a book drive throughout the Weston community to help get the school the books it desperately needs for its school library to truly aid in the learning process. Please consider donating unwanted or unneeded books to this important cause. A box will be near the coat closet in the parish hall. If you would like more information, you can contact Carter or at 781-864-9188.

Thanks! and Congratulations!
The second transition workshop was a great success, and I would like to thank all who attended and all who helped make it possible. Participants were divided about equally men and women, and from outside and within the parish. We are asking those who attended to let me know if they are interested in a follow-up program. Further information is available from Beverly Ryle at www.successonyourownterms.com, and you can subscribe to her newsletter there, too.

Meg Pierce has joined us as "distinguished associate publisher" of the "eKeys" newsletter, and for that Keith Ward and I are very grateful. Meg quickly mastered the (very much improved Constant Contact) system and can publish on her own anytime. She's also brought her practiced eye to the content of the newsletter and made important improvements in content. Thanks Meg! John Marchiony
