PENTECOST
The Day of Pentecost is the only festival day in the Christian calendar which was already named before it happened. Pentecost (literally "fiftieth") is observed in the Hebrew calendar on the 50th day after the Passover, originally as an agricultural celebration of the gifts of natural growth and eventually including prayers of thanksgiving for the gift of the law of Moses to form and guide the Covenant community. It was on this day of Pentecost that the disciples experienced the empowerment of the Spirit for proclaiming and living out the good news of God's eternal gift of life. In the Christian calendar, it is observed on the 50th day after Easter and it is a day to celebrate God's loving kindess and guidance in our lives together. The church color of the day is red, symbolizing the power and brilliance of the "fire" of the Spirit. I hope to see you in church this Sunday, the Day of Pentecost!

Outreach Update
B-SAFE Program, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, June 30-July 03 PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING US A HAND! IT ONLY TAKES A FEW HOURS TO MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE! You can help shop, prepare a lunch or snack (evening or AM), or help deliver the food, or help on a field trip.
This summer, St. Peter's will serve as a partner church for one week as part of a larger effort of the Episcopal Diocese to serve over 350 children and teens at 6 sites in the Boston area in a six week summer day camp. The B-SAFE program provides academic enrichment, sports, field trips, good food, community, and a safe place for kids, plus jobs for older teens. Last summer, over 40 parishioners participated in a week-long sponsorship of B-SAFE, and it was a wonderful, enriching experience. Partner churches provide a week of food (lunch and snack) at one site plus organize and fund a field trip on the last day of the week (which will be Thursday, July 3). St. Stephens will provide for 60 middle school students, and jobs for 10 counselors. Please help make this program a success, while investing in the lives of youth, and give some time. Contact Ron Corley or call me at 617 512-9610 to volunteer of get more information. Book Collection for the Lawrence Family Development Charter School in Lawrence, MA Carter Hulings, a sophomore at Weston High School, is in the process of becoming an Eagle scout in Weston's Troop 153. As part of his Eagle project, he is holding a book drive throughout the Weston community to help get the school the books it desperately needs for its school library to truly aid in the learning process. Please consider donating unwanted or unneeded books to this important cause. A box will be near the coat closet in the parish hall. Transition in the
Second Half of Life with Beverly Ryle Saturday morning, May 17, 2008, 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM We live in a world where change is constant, but we make little space in our lives for dealing with it. The most significant events - death of a loved one, birth of a grandchild, a health setback -- get swallowed up in our culture's pervasive impetus to move on. In this workshop transitions coach Beverly Ryle will help us understand how to be in transition, to honor and adjust to these events in our lives. The second half of life today brings the expectation that many of us will live independently into our 90s with active minds and bodies. Yet while the spirit is young, many acknowledge the unmistakable signs of aging. This workshop will give participants an opportunity to share what they are experiencing, and to begin the process of planning for the coming years rather than waking up to find they are gone. Musical Notes!!
Hymns by Charles Wesley (1707-1788) this Sunday!
Charles Wesley has written the words to a number of hymns that are included in the 1982 Hymnal. Since he just had his 300th birthday in 2007 and since he is an ancestor of our own Wes Kussmaul, we will celebrate both Pentecost and Charles Wesley this Sunday. The best-known hymns of Charles Wesley are Christ the Lord is risen today, Hark! The herald angels sing, Love Divine, all loves excelling, and O for a thousand tongues to sing. As special request by Wes, the choir will sing And can it be that I should gain? from the Methodist hymnal during communion.
Singers Wanted for Confirmation Service at St. Peter's May 31 On Saturday morning, May 31, eleven young people from our church, together with about 45 youth and adults from seven other parishes, will be confirmed in a 10 am service at St. Peter's. I am hoping that many parishioners from St. Peter's will celebrate this festive occasion with these young people by participating in the choir (rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings and Saturday morning, May 31, at 8:30 am!). Please let me know right away if you are going to sing, since I would like to invite the choirs from the other churches as well! Mark your Calendars: Special Music on June 1! On Sunday, June 1, the Adult Choir will be singing Schubert's Mass in G Major accompanied by a string quartet of High School age young musicians from Rivers Conservatory. The choir has already begun to rehearse the piece, but it is still possible to join. The rehearsals will take place as follows: Thursdays May 8 and 15 from 7:30 to 8:15 pm and Sundays, May 11 and 18 from 9 to 9:30 am. The dress rehearsal with the strings will take place on Thursday, May 29, at 7:30 pm! Join us!
