National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, Sept. 29

Drug Take Back New College of Florida will be participating in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, from 10 am-2 pm. During that time, members of the Sarasota and Bradenton communities are encouraged to drop off potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs at the New College Police Station where officers will safely dispose of them. Participation in the program is completely anonymous.

The New College Police Station is located at 501 College Drive, just one block north of University Parkway on U.S. 41. The public should park in the Heiser Natural Sciences parking lot opposite the police station. For questions, please contact Lt. Mike Kessie at 941-487-4210 or mkessie@ncf.edu.

Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai is an award-winning spoken word poet and activist based in Brooklyn, N.Y., whose work addresses identity, culture, hip-hop feminism, gender, domestic violence, sexual assault, Asian Pacific Islander American issues, voter enfranchisement, urban development, youth activism, war and non-violence. She has been featured in over 500 performances worldwide at venues including the White House, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, House of Blues, Apollo Theater, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and three seasons of the award-winning "Russell Simmons Presents HBO Def Poetry." The author of Inside Outside Outside Inside (2004), Thought Crimes (2005), No Sugar Please (2008), as well as the recordings Infinity Breaks (2007) and Further She Wrote (2010), Tsai has shared stages with Mos Def, KRS-One, Sonia Sanchez, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, Amiri Baraka, Harry Belafonte and many more. R.A.D. for Women Basic Self Defense Class is being offered to New College of Florida and USF Sarasota-Manatee students, staff and faculty in three evening sessions on September 26-28, from 6-10 pm. Focus One Interview with Gillian Sorensen

museum day Associate Professor of Political Science Frank Alcock will interview Gillian Sorensen, senior advisor to the United Nations Foundation, on his talk show Focus One on Friday, Sept. 28, at 9:30 am. Sorensen works to broaden UN support through advocacy, education, and public outreach. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a fellow at the University of Southern California Center on Public Diplomacy. Alcock will interview Sorensen during the first half of the hour-long program, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A from students. Any faculty, staff or students interested in being part of the audience should contact Frank Alcock at falcock@ncf.edu .

Author and lecturer Donald Asher will present "Admissions Strategies for Highly Competitive Graduate Programs" on Monday, Oct. 1, 6:30-8 pm in the Teaching Auditorium (HCL8). This lecture for students will cover the graduate admissions process, personal statements, making requests for letters of recommendation and how to best present New College in the overall graduate school application. The lecture is sponsored by the Center for Career Education. All members of the campus community are invited.

Featuring Amy Gorelick

Amy Gorelick, editor-in-chief at University Press of Florida, will discuss the basics of getting your work published, submitting a proposal, when to submit a full manuscript, the review process, the production process, marketing and selling works of non-fiction, and things to avoid when working with a publisher. She will also discuss the realities of academic publishing in the digital age. A question and answer period will follow the brief presentation, with an opportunity to meet and discuss your own work in detail with Gorelick.
