U.S. News logo U.S. News & World Report ranked New College of Florida the No. 5 public liberal arts college in their 2013 rankings of the Best National Liberal Arts Colleges released today. Among all liberal arts colleges, public and private, New College ranked in the top tier coming in at No. 87, up seven spots from last year.

In a list of schools whose students graduated with the least debt, U.S. News placed New College in the 11th spot among America's public and private liberal arts colleges. Only 32 percent of New College's 2011 graduates left college with any debt, an average among them of $14,172. The national average is $20,467 according to a 2012 study by the Institute for College Access & Success.

Johnston William R. Johnston, former president and chief operating officer of the New York Stock Exchange, has been elected chair of the New College of Florida Board of Trustees.  His election was confirmed on Saturday during a regular meeting of the board. In addition to Johnston, the New College Board also elected Keith D. Monda, former president and chief operating officer of Coach, Inc., as vice chair. Both Johnston and Monda's terms run through 2014.

Johnston succeeds former Florida State Senator Robert M. Johnson, who has served as chairman of the New College Board since being reappointed to the body in 2010 by then-Governor Charlie Crist. Johnson also served as a founding member and chair of the New College of Florida Board from 2001-2007. Monda succeeds Elaine M. Keating, who has served as vice chair of the New College Board since 2008. Both Johnson and Keating will continue to serve as trustees of the College.

Snyder It is with sadness that New College of Florida reports the passing of Lee Snyder, Professor Emeritus of History. Professor Snyder served on the New College faculty with great distinction from 1969 until his retirement in 2003.

A man of tremendous learning and wide-ranging interests, Professor Snyder was an intellectual historian who specialized in Medieval and Renaissance Europe. Among his many accomplishments was the founding of New College's Biennial Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Studies, which is recognized today as one of the leading conferences of its kind in the United States. His book, Macro History: A Theoretical Approach to Comparative World History, marked the culmination of his long career as a historian and stands as a testament to his scholarly passion.

Half the SkyWEDU, west central Florida's primary PBS station, announces a new season of Community Cinema starting with a film that travels 10 countries on a journey to tell the stories of inspiring, courageous individuals. The first film of the season, Half the Sky, follows New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and celebrity advocates America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde, as they meet inspiring individuals and discover how they're confronting the oppression of women and girls. The special, based on the widely acclaimed book Half the Sky by columnists Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, reveals the real, meaningful solutions being fashioned through health care, education and economic empowerment for women and girls. A town hall discussion will follow the film. This event is free and open to the public, however due to limited seating, reservations are recommended. Tickets can be reserved online at wedu.org/cinema.

TCPThird Coast Percussion is a Chicago-based quartet whose performances have been described as "sonically spectacular" (Chicago Tribune). The quartet has won accolades for its recent recording of music by John Cage (MODE Records). In celebration of Cage's centennial, Third Coast Percussion will perform the composer's Radio Music, enlisting 16 students from New Music New College Director Stephen Miles's Experimental Music class. Also on the program: Mallet Music, a recent composition by one of contemporary music's living giants, Steve Reich. New Music New College will present them in the informal atmosphere of its improvised "Club Sudakoff."
