New Topics New College, a collaboration of the New College Foundation and New College of Florida, has announced six programs for New Topics logo2012-2013. This dynamic community series features national speakers in a lecture or panel discussion format, followed by audience Q&A.

 

This year's topics include a preview of the 2012 elections (Oct 23), what makes a great beach (Nov 8), prescription pain medication (Dec 4), positive aging pioneers (Jan 15), healthcare information exchange (Feb 26) and the challenges of sub-Saharan Africa (Mar 21).   

 

All programs will be held at 5:30 pm in the Mildred Sainer Pavilion, 5313 Bay Shore Road in Sarasota. A reception follows each program and provides an opportunity to meet the speakers, as well as students and faculty in attendance.

A lack of interaction with the environment and need for solitude is the theme of "Materialscape: An Industrial View of Nature," opening at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum September 1. The six-week show  features the work of New College art professor Richard Herzog and Seth Fairweather. Both artists utilize industrial materials in their work with Fairweather favoring glass and Herzog using steel, plastic, wood and vinyl.

TCPThird Coast Percussion is a Chicago-based quartet whose performances have been described as "sonically spectacular" (Chicago Tribune). The quartet has won accolades for its recent recording of music by John Cage (MODE Records). In celebration of Cage's centennial, Third Coast Percussion will perform the composer's Radio Music, enlisting 16 students from New Music New College Director Stephen Miles's Experimental Music class. Also on the program: Mallet Music, a recent composition by one of contemporary music's living giants, Steve Reich. New Music New College will present them in the informal atmosphere of its improvised "Club Sudakoff."
