 New Music New College's 14th season will showcase a brilliant array of international artists in its five-concert subscription series, and will offer more educational events and more free performances by New College students, faculty and alumnae/i than ever before. Kicking off the 2012-13 season will be Third Coast Percussion (Sept 22), a Chicago-based quartet that will perform music of the legendary John Cage in celebration of the composer's 100th birthday. Other guest artists for the season include improvisational pianist Marilyn Lerner  (January 19), vocalist/composer Toby Twining and his ensemble (April 20), and the JACK Quartet (Nov 17), which will perform compositions by New College graduates who have earned recognition in the world of contemporary music. Free Artist Conversations will be held the day before four of this year's performances.

New College of Florida student Lucas Ballestin is finishing up his summer internship at Robert Allen Law in Miami by coordinating the annual Miami-Dade Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012. This summer, Ballestin worked as the Bates-Meyer Intern in Corporate Responsibility at the boutique international law firm owned by New College alumnus Robert Allen. Ballestin is a fourth-year student from Westin, Fla., working on a triple area of concentration in economics, history and philosophy.
Robert Allen Law has maintained a long-standing commitment to this regional cleanup effort, which is part of the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup initiative. For more than a decade, thousands of residents and visitors in the Miami-Dade area have volunteered each year on more than 40 beaches along the county's coast. A Mighty Light Flight is an exhibition featuring work by Dustin Juengel and Mark Humphrey. Humphrey and Juengel's artwork defies restrictions. Humphrey's sculpture tackles the physical phenomenon of gravity. The sculptures, constructed out of steel are arranged to create precarious constellations of form and movement. Juengel's large scale oil paintings inspire flight from the prosaic and mundane. Dustin Juengel is the Studio Arts Shop Technician at New College of Florida.

Richard Herzog: Everything is Touching by Underground Wires

Everything is Touching by Underground Wires is a new installation by New College professor Richard Herzog on display in Gallery 3 at Art Center Sarasota, through September 28, 2012. Using non-traditional materials, Herzog constructs around the space to create a new environment inside the gallery. Herzog's goal as an artist is to make viewers look at things a bit differently and consider more closely the world that surrounds them. His recent work has been exploring the "artificialization" of nature. Richard Herzog is an assistant professor of sculpture at New College of Florida.
