Frank Alcock will be giving a lecture in Sainer Pavilion this evening at 5:30 pm on the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the Gulf of Mexico and the ongoing debate over continued offshore drilling in the Gulf.

This event is a special one, because it is a promo for a possible season series of talks about issues of importance to Floridians to be taped at New College and aired on WEDU public television.

Please come out and show your support for Professor Alcock and this possible season series on WEDU by attending the television taping tonight. (See details below.)

Dr. Frank Alcock, senior fellow at the Collins Center for Public Policy and associate professor of political science at New College will present a lecture titled "To Drill or not to Drill?" on Tuesday, May 1, at 5:30 pm in Sainer Pavilion. The talk will consider dueling narratives of the stakes involved with expanded drilling throughout the United States, in the Gulf of Mexico and within Florida's coastal waters. It will argue that both narratives are compromised by exaggerated claims and rigid policy stances that continue to paralyze energy policy. Tickets are $10. New College faculty, staff and students can attend for free.

Sister Aloysius, the headmistress of the fictional St. Nicholas School in 1960's Bronx, decides to trust her instincts. She suspects the beloved head priest, Father Flynn, of having inappropriate relations with the school's first African-American student, a boy, and she intends to see the man leave her school at any cost. Doubt follows Sister Aloysius's search for the truth, though there is no guarantee that she will find it, or peace of mind.

Ravaged by storms and privation, the ephemeral colony was abandoned and lost to time, known to historians only through a few letters and documents. No evidence of the colony had been discovered until 1992, when Florida archaeologists discovered the remains of one of Luna's sunken ships at the bottom of Pensacola Bay. This presentation will describe the Luna expedition and the archaeological research of Luna's shipwrecked fleet.
