Fisher New College of Florida student Grace Fisher has been named a national 2012 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact for her personal commitment to improving the Sarasota-Bradenton community through service, community-based research and advocacy. Fisher is a second-year student in sociology from Jupiter, Fla., who has spent many hours coordinating clothing and food drives, volunteering with food pantries and working on homelessness issues. Drug Take-Back logo New College of Florida will be participating in the third National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 10 am - 2 pm. During that time, members of the Sarasota and Bradenton communities are encouraged to drop off potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs at the New College Police Station, where officers will safely dispose of them. New College of Florida's Art Department and Student Government are pleased to present New York-based artist Kymia Nawabi, who will speak on April 18, at 6:30 pm in the Mildred Sainer Pavilion. Nawabi's talk will include the development of her studio work and recent achievements including competing in and winning Bravo's reality TV series Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. Nawabi, a first-generation Iranian-American artist, earned her M.F.A. from the University of Florida in 2006 and B.F.A. from East Carolina University in 2003. She is the recipient of numerous prestigious residencies and awards. Click here for more information.

This concert marks the Florida premiere of a new work by Michael Gordon, noted American composer and founder/co-director of Bang on a Can, the legendary contemporary music organization in New York. Timber is a concert-length tour de force, scored for six graduated wooden simantras, percussion instruments devised by French composer Iannis Xenakis. In this new work, Gordon shapes the music in both polyrhythmic and dynamic waves of textures. Visit newmusicnewcollege.org for details.

New College of Florida art AOC seniors will exhibit artwork at Eckerd College, April 22 - May 11 in the Cobb Gallery. New College students included in the exhibition are Nicole Cardenas, Eugenie Fortier, Sherry Haber, Alexandra Miranda, Suzanne Olvey and Ben Sims. The exhibition, titled "Four in One," features the artwork of students from four area colleges including Eckerd College, New College of Florida, Ringling College of Art and Design and the University of South Florida in Tampa. New College seniors will exhibit featured works from their senior thesis including painting, sculpture, drawing and installation. A reception for the artists will be held on April 22, 5 - 7 pm, and the exhibition runs through Friday, May 11. Additionally, a Gallery Talk will be held Monday, May 7th by the four chairs of each schools respective Fine Arts program.

For over a decade, the New College music department has partnered with a resident ensemble from the Sarasota Orchestra to promote music created by New College students. This concert by the Sarasota String Quartet will be the culmination of rehearsals that took place in 2011-2012 between the quartet and students

Sarasota Film Festival Offers Student Ticket Discount

The Sarasota Film Festival is offering a Student Passport for students to receive any four regularly-priced film tickets for $20 (regular ticket price is $12 each). The festival runs through April 22nd. 

The four tickets can be split between as many people as you like, i.e., you can split the passport so that you get two tickets and the other person gets two, so that you can pick your own films or go to films together. Or four people could go in together so they could each get a $4 ticket.

The Student Passport can be purchased in the box office, in the lobby of the Hollywood 20 movie theater. Student ID is required for purchase.

Discounted tickets are being offered to New College students for the ATP/USTA Sarasota Open, a professional tennis tournament which will be held April 14th - 22nd at the Longboat Key Club Tennis Gardens.
