 Claire Comiskey, a fourth-year transfer student at New College of Florida, has received the honor of presenting her research on women's microfinance groups in Rajasthan, India at the Council on Undergraduate Research's (CUR) Posters on the Hill event, April 23-24, in Washington, D.C. Each year, the CUR honors the research achievements of 75 undergraduate students from colleges and universities nationwide at its Posters on the Hill reception on Capitol Hill. Each student presents his or her research, displayed on posters, to the members of Congress, congressional staff members, federal government officials and others in attendance. Comiskey was one of only 74 students selected from a total of 850 applicants. She will be seeking Student Research and Travel Grant funding to support her trip. Read More

 New College of Florida has announced that President Gordon E. "Mike" Michalson, Jr. will give the keynote address at New College's 46th Commencement on Friday, May 25, 2012. This year, approximately 190 students are expected to receive Bachelor of Arts degrees from the state's honors college for the liberal arts and sciences. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m. on the New College bay front behind College Hall. Last year's speaker was prominent Holocaust educator Dr. Helen N. Fagin. New College of Florida students Sophie Lang and Katie McAlpine have been awarded grants for specialized research study with the National Institute on Standards and Technology (NIST) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. The program runs from May through August 2012 with support from the National Science Foundation and includes a stipend for travel and housing. Sophie Lang, of Tallahassee, Fla., is a third-year student pursuing her bachelor's degree in chemistry from New College and an  associate's degree in fire science from Florida State College at Jacksonville. Lang will participate in the Fire Research Division, which develops, verifies and utilizes measurements and predictive methods to quantify the behavior of fire and means to reduce the impact of fire on people, property and the environment. Katie McAlpine, of Spring Hill, Fla., is a third-year student in physics, who has collaborated with Dr. Mariana Sendova, professor of physics, in New College's Optical Spectroscopy and Nano-Materials Laboratory. McAlpine will participate this summer in the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, at the JILA Center for Atomic, Molecular, & Optical Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Book Release & Celebration for Dr. Mary Lindsay Elmendorf

Join in celebrating Dr. Elmendorf's book release and 95th birthday with a potluck. There will be a book signing for the newly-released From Southern Belle to Global Rebel: Memoirs of Anthropologist and Activist Mary Lindsay Elmendorf. The autobiography spans more than 90 years of experience in international and domestic settings with personal stories adding charm and interest to the expansive settings and serious themes. The potluck will begin at 6 pm; please bring a dish to share. Dr. Elmendorf will share stories from the book as attendees enjoy birthday cake. Mary Elmendorf was New College's "first lady" in the 1960s and early 1970s. As the wife of former president John Elmendorf, she initiated the off-campus study program, which played an important part in the lives of many New College students over the ensuing decades.

New College of Florida's Art Department and Student Government are pleased to present New York-based artist Kymia Nawabi, who will speak on April 18, at 6:30 pm in the Mildred Sainer Pavilion. Nawabi's talk will include the development of her studio work and recent achievements including competing in and winning Bravo's reality TV series Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. Nawabi, a first-generation Iranian-American artist, earned her MFA from the University of Florida in 2006 and BFA from East Carolina University in 2003. Mantra Percussion Performs Michael Gordon's Timber April 21 at 8 pm

This concert marks the Florida premiere of a new work by Michael Gordon, noted American composer and founder/co-director of Bang on a Can, the legendary contemporary music organization in New York. Timber is a concert-length tour de force, scored for six graduated wooden simantras, percussion instruments devised by French composer Iannis Xenakis. New College of Florida art AOC seniors will exhibit artwork at Eckerd College, April 22 - May 11 in the Cobb Gallery. New College students included in the exhibition are Nicole Cardenas, Eugenie Fortier, Sherry Haber, Alexandra Miranda, Suzanne Olvey and Ben Sims. The exhibition, titled "Four in One", features the artwork of students from four area colleges including Eckerd College, New College of Florida, Ringling College of Art and Design and the University of South Florida in Tampa. New College Seniors will exhibit featured works from their senior thesis including painting, sculpture, drawing and installation. A reception for the artists will be held on April 22, 5 - 7 pm, and the exhibition runs through Friday, May 11. Additionally, a Gallery Talk will be held Monday, May 7th by the four chairs of each schools respective Fine Arts program.

Sarasota Film Festival Offers Student Ticket Discount The Sarasota Film Festival is offering a Student Passport for students to receive any four regularly-priced film tickets for $20 (regular ticket price is $12 each). The four tickets can be split between as many people as you like, i.e., you can split the passport so that you get 2 tickets and the other person gets 2, so that you can pick your own films or go to films together. Or 4 people could go in together so they could each get a $4 ticket.
The Student Passport can be purchased in the box office, in the lobby of the Hollywood 20 movie theater. Student ID is required for purchase.
