Bob Peterson Left Lasting Impression on New College
| |
It is with great sadness that New College of Florida announces the passing of J. Robert "Bob" Peterson, longtime College and Foundation board member and generous contributor to New College and its students. Peterson died on Thursday, March 15, of complications following surgery. He was 88 years old.
"I had great personal fondness as well as respect for Bob," said New College President Mike Michalson in recalling a man whose generosity impacted not only the school but countless other arts and education organizations in the Sarasota area. "He was a remarkable man, extremely bright, who had an impressive command of the details of New College life. Although Bob was very no-nonsense, he possessed a very droll wit that he would deploy with uncanny timing. He was 'courtly,' in the best sense of the term, and he will be very greatly missed." For 25 years, the Paul Hansma Research Group at the University of California at Santa Barbara has been developing Atomic Force Microscopes (AFMs) for a startling variety of scientific uses. This ingenious device has shown there are adhesive molecules in abalone shell, bone and other materials that use the nanoscale mechanism of "sacrificial bonds" and "hidden length" to dissipate energy and protect these materials from fracture. These instruments have the potential to diagnose bone fragility and guide development of new therapies for decreasing bone fragility. Hansma is a New College alumnus.

As part of a series of lectures on Contemporary Artists and Women Artists, New College students Walter Potmesil, Rachel Robison and Irini Zervas will talk about artists Kay Sage, Dorothea Tanning and Joan Mitchell, respectively. Sage was a surrealist whose constructed images invite interpretation. Tanning was also a surrealist married to painter and sculptor Max Ernst. This lecture will explore the progression of Tanning's work, culminating in her cloth sculptures of the 1970s. Mitchell's depictions of landscapes - influenced by personal memories of her homes in the Midwest, New York and her garden near Giverny - reflect a preoccupation with the scale, light and dynamism of nature. As a second-generation Abstract Expressionist, her works are fully steeped in the ideologies of her time. Click here for a complete calendar listing of events.
