Student to Study in India on Critical Language Scholarship

Ilene Gillispie Ilene Gillispie, a fourth-year Religion student at New College of Florida, has been awarded a Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to study Punjabi in Chandigarh, India, the capital city in the northern region of Punjab, during the summer of 2012. 

 

Gillispie, from Alexandria, Va., is one of only 12 undergraduate and graduate students selected to study in Chandigarh, where she will live with a host family and study Punjabi intensively for 10 weeks. She and the other students will have cultural excursions as a group and also be given the opportunity to travel independently. She hopes to visit many sites of historical importance to the Sikh religion. At New College, Gillispie's studies have concentrated in Indian religions, and she is currently writing her thesis about the role of women in the Sikh religion.

book burningsFighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings is an exhibition from the collection of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., presented by the New College Library Association (NCLA) and American Jewish Committee (AJC). The exhibit focuses on how a series of book burnings, initiated by German university students on May 10, 1933, became a powerful symbol during World War II, prompting counter demonstrations in New York and other American cities.

New Topics New College: Alzheimer's: The Memory Disease

For over two decades, Dr. Michael Mullan, president and CEO of The Roskamp Institute, has been involved with finding the causes of, and new treatments for, Alzheimer's disease, a disorder which afflicts increasing numbers of individuals as the world's population ages. Dr. Mullan will discuss the focal points in Alzheimer's research from the discovery of the seminal findings of rare genetic errors that trigger the whole gamut of Alzheimer's pathology to the present-day search for novel treatments to combat the disease. This seminar will reveal the work of the Roskamp Institute and other groups working worldwide to combat this growing threat.

  

Jason Yi Solo Exhibition

Jason Yi is an interdisciplinary artist creating sculpture, installation, drawing, videos and photography that explore "a sense of location within one's physical space, culture and history. ... [His] work invokes the paradoxical notion of 'harmonious conflict' where compositional/conceptual relationship of materials and images are questioned and yet valued." 

 

New College Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Studies

The Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Studies is a biennial event covering all aspects of the Middle Ages and Renaissance including topics in European and Mediterranean history, literature, art and religion from the fourth to the 17th centuries. Featured speakers are Duane Osheim (University of Virginia) and Jody Enders (University of California, Santa Barbara). There will be about 130 speakers participating in the conference. This is an academic conference, but members of the public are welcome. The conference is free for New College faculty, staff and students.

As part of a series of lectures on Contemporary Artists and Women Artists, New College students Gracie Loesser and Nicole Cardenas will talk about artists Ron Mueck and Mary Miss, respectively. The lectures are part of the fifth annual series, "Interpretations of Twentieth Century Art: Sharing the Scholarship 2012."

As part of Florida Archaeology Month, New College and Time Sifters Archaeology Society present Archaeology Fest, a fun-filled day of tours, lectures, demonstrations and hands-on learning, films and more.
