Urban Sociology Comes to Life

LBK Project Wouldn't it be cool to go to a college where you could actually practice the principles of urban sociology in the local community? Look no further than New College of Florida, where a sociology professor and his students are working with community leaders to revitalize commercial development on the north end of Sarasota's most prestigious barrier island, Longboat Key.

 

The New College connection came about when Tom Aposporos, a Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force member and president of the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce, suggested that local independent resources be used to conduct a community-based planning study. His search quickly led to New College and its noted urban sociologist, Dr. David Brain. Read More

book burningsFighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings is an exhibition from the collection of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., presented by the New College Library Association (NCLA) and American Jewish Committee (AJC). The exhibit focuses on how a series of book burnings, initiated by German university students on May 10, 1933, became a powerful symbol during World War II, prompting counter demonstrations in New York and other American cities.

New Music's annual Crossroads performances are the scene of musical mixing-performers from different backgrounds, performing together, learning from each other. The first of two outdoor festival performances will feature Fluid Motion performing a special tribute to the late jazz legend Sam Rivers, who was originally scheduled to perform. Special guests include Ronnie Burrage on drums (photo).

This panel discussion on race and experimental music will be moderated by New Music New College Director Stephen Miles. The distinguished panelists will include MacArthur Award-winning composer and scholar George E. Lewis (photo), celebrated writer and theorist bell hooks and jazz drummer and educator Ronnie Burrage.

New College student musicians will collaborate with principal musicians of the Sarasota Orchestra in an outdoor rock happening under the stars. Sarasota Orchestra musicians (including Principal Tubist Jay Hunsberger and Principal Bassist John Miller) and student bands New Ensemble and Physical Plant will join Fluid Motion. Special guests include Jonathan Powell (photo) on trumpet and Ronnie Burrage on drums.

For over two decades, Dr. Michael Mullan, president and CEO of The Roskamp Institute, has been involved with finding the causes of, and new treatments for, Alzheimer's disease, a disorder which afflicts increasing numbers of individuals as the world's population ages. Dr. Mullan will discuss the focal points in Alzheimer's research from the discovery of the seminal findings of rare genetic errors that trigger the whole gamut of Alzheimer's pathology to the present-day search for novel treatments to combat the disease. This seminar will reveal the work of the Roskamp Institute and other groups working worldwide to combat this growing threat.

  

Jason Yi Solo Exhibition

Jason Yi is an interdisciplinary artist creating sculpture, installation, drawing, videos and photography that explore "a sense of location within one's physical space, culture and history.. [his] work invokes the paradoxical notion of 'harmonious conflict' where compositional/conceptual relationship of materials and images are questioned and yet valued." Jason will be presenting a lecture on his work in Sainer Auditorium on March 5 at 6 pm with a reception to follow in the Isermann Gallery.

 

New College Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Studies

The Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Studies in a biennial event covering all aspects of the Middle Ages and Renaissance including topics in European and Mediterranean history, literature, art and religion from the fourth to the 17th centuries. Featured speakers are Duane Osheim (University of Virginia) and Jody Enders (University of California, Santa Barbara). There will be about 130 speakers participating in the conference. This is an academic conference, but members of the public are welcome. The conference is free for New College faculty, staff and students.
