NCF on the TODAY Show as No. 3 Best Value College in America

New College of Florida has been ranked the No. 3 "Best Value Public College in America" for 2012 by The Princeton Review, one of America's best known education services companies, and USA TODAY, one of the nation's most widely read newspapers. The No. 1 rated public institution was the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
As part of this year's rankings, New College was featured on the NBC TODAY Show on Tuesday, February 7, from 7-9 a.m. and in USA TODAY's February 7 print edition. Read More

Sacred Texts of the Ancient Maya and the Colonial Encounter

The students taking the group ISP "Prehispanic and Colonial Maya
Manuscripts" are organizing an exhibit on "Sacred Texts of the Ancient
Maya and the Colonial Encounter." The exhibit will be on display in
the living room/porch area of College Hall from Friday, February 3rd
until Sunday, February 12th. Students from the ISP will be available
to give guided tours (email gvail@ncf.edu for details), or visitors
are welcome to stop by and see the exhibit at their convenience.

The Work of Translation, the Work of Writing with Kirk Nesset

Professor and author Kirk Nesset will be on campus Tuesday, February 7th, to talk about the work of translating and his most recent book, Alphabet of the World, a translation of selected poetry and prose by Venezuelan poet and essayist Eugenio Montejo. Anyone interested in translation as an art form, Latin American or Venezuelan literature or creative writing is encouraged to attend.

Fighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings is an exhibition from the collection of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., presented by the New College Library Association (NCLA) and American Jewish Committee (AJC). The exhibit focuses on how a series of book burnings, initiated by German university students on May 10, 1933, became a powerful symbol during World War II, prompting counter demonstrations in New York and other American cities.

New College Annual Juried Art Exhibition Opening Reception

The fourth annual New College Juried Student Art Exhibition features sculpture, painting, drawing and printmaking work by 16 New College of Florida students now through March 2, 2012, in Isermann Gallery. Juror Kim Russo, head of the fine arts department at Ringling College of Art and Design, will give a talk and present awards during the Opening Reception on Thursday, February 9, from 6:30-8 pm.
The exhibition is free and open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm in Isermann Gallery, located in the Caples Fine Arts Complex at 5313 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota.

Dick has served as director of Physical Plant since the late 1990s, where he and his crews have been responsible for all aspects of building and system maintenance and repairs. Please join us to honor our much-beloved "Dr. Mike" who will be stepping down in June after 11 years as president. At his retirement, he will have served as chief administrative officer of New College for 16 of the past 20 years, including five years as dean and warden (1992-1997), while the College was still part of the University of South Florida. During his tenure, New College became an independent member of the State University System and one of the most highly ranked public undergraduate schools in the nation. We thank Dr. Michalson for the outstanding educational legacy he has created, keeping New College at the forefront of higher education.

Dennis P. Lockhart, 14th president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, will give the talk "Views on the Economic Outlooks and Federal Reserve Policy." This New Topics special event will examine the economic challenges facing the United States in 2012, including sluggish growth, stubbornly high unemployment and the European debt crisis. Lockhart will also look at how monetary policy affects, and is affected by, those factors. Prior to joining the Bank in 2007, he was on the faculty of Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service. Previous to that, he was managing partner at the private equity firm of Zephyr Management and held various positions, domestic and international, at Citicorp/Citibank. The event is co-sponsored by the Global Interdependence Center.
