Register Now for the 2012 Sarasota Bay Watershed Symposium

 Registration is now open for the 2012 Sarasota Bay Watershed Symposium, to be held February 15-17 in Sudakoff Conference Center at New College of Florida. This year's event marks the 25th anniversary of the area's first watershed symposium, which took place at New College in 1987. Tickets cost $20, which covers attendance and meals on all three days of the event. The general public is invited.
The 2012 Sarasota Bay Watershed Symposium, which is presented by New College of Florida in partnership with the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, will bring together scientists, managers, policy makers, educators and the interested public for exciting discussion, networking, and learning about Sarasota Bay and her watersheds. With symposium sessions on a wide variety of current topics from fisheries to bird rookeries, from growth management to stormwater management, from ecotourism to economics, we're expecting lively discussion and some fresh perspectives to emerge!

Sacred Texts of the Ancient Maya and the Colonial Encounter

The students taking the group ISP "Prehispanic and Colonial Maya
Manuscripts" are organizing an exhibit on "Sacred Texts of the Ancient
Maya and the Colonial Encounter." The exhibit will be on display in
the living room/porch area of College Hall from Friday, February 3rd
until Sunday, February 12th. Students from the ISP will be available
to give guided tours (email gvail@ncf.edu for details), or visitors
are welcome to stop by and see the exhibit at their convenience.

 Fighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings is an exhibition from the collection of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., presented by the New College Library Association (NCLA) and (AJC) American Jewish Committee. The exhibit focuses on how a series of book burnings, initiated by German university students on May 10, 1933, became a powerful symbol during World War II, prompting counter demonstrations in New York and other American cities.

New College Annual Juried Art Exhibition Opening Reception

The fourth annual New College Juried Student Art Exhibition features sculpture, painting, drawing and printmaking work by 16 New College of Florida students now through March 2, 2012, in Isermann Gallery. Juror Kim Russo, head of the fine arts department at Ringling College of Art and Design, will give a talk and present awards during the Opening Reception on Thursday, February 9, from 6:30-8 pm.
The exhibition is free and open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm in Isermann Gallery, located in the Caples Fine Arts Complex at 5313 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota.

Retirement Reception for Dick Olney

After almost 18 years of dedicated service, Dick Olney will be retiring from New College of Florida on February 10, 2012. Dick has served as director of Physical Plant since the late 1990s, where he and his crews have been responsible for all aspects of building and system maintenance and repairs. He is the shining example of customer service and support, always striving to keep the College's buildings temperature-controlled and well supplied with water and always willing to go the extra mile to help employees with building set-ups, clean-up and everything else for which a campus our size and age has a need! Please come help celebrate Dick's retirement with us on Friday, February 10, 2011 at Cook Hall. |

Please join us to honor our much-beloved "Dr. Mike" who will be stepping down in June after 11 years as president. At his retirement, he will have served as chief administrative officer of New College for 16 of the past 20 years, including five years as dean and warden (1992-1997), while the College was still part of the University of South Florida. During his tenure, New College became an independent member of the State University System and one of the most highly ranked public undergraduate schools in the nation. We thank Dr. Michalson for the outstanding educational legacy he has created, keeping New College at the forefront of higher education.

Dennis P. Lockhart, 14th president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, will give the talk, "Views on the Economic Outlooks and Federal Reserve Policy." This New Topics special event will examine the economic challenges facing the United States in 2012, including sluggish growth, stubbornly high unemployment and the European debt crisis. Lockhart will also look at how monetary policy affects, and is affected by, those factors. Prior to joining the Bank in 2007, he was on the faculty of Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service. Previous to that, he was managing partner at the private equity firm of Zephyr Management and held various positions, domestic and international, at Citicorp/Citibank. The event is co-sponsored by the Global Interdependence Center.
