| Two NCF Students Study Abroad on Gilman Scholarships | | Two New College of Florida students have been awarded Gilman Scholarships sponsored by the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Sandra Werb, of Stuart, Fla., will study in London, and Mariana Zapata, of Miami, Fla., will study outside Paris in Creteil, France, during the spring semester. Werb is a third-year humanities major at New College of Florida focusing on literature, film and history. Zapata is a third-year sociology major at New College of Florida. Read More

2012 New College Juried Student Art Exhibition, through Mar. 2

The fourth annual New College Juried Student Art Exhibition features sculpture, painting, drawing and printmaking work by 16 New College of Florida students now through March 2, 2012, in Isermann Gallery. Juror Kim Russo, head of the fine arts department at Ringling College of Art and Design, will give a talk and present awards during the Opening Reception on Thursday, February 9, from 6:30-8 pm.

Composer Randall Woolf will join pianist Kathleen Supové for a week-long residency at New College, during which both artists will work with New College student composers and will present a special program for students in the Sarasota County public schools. Kathleen Supové, one of today's finest contemporary pianists, returns to New College for the latest installment in her Exploding Piano series. Through electronic media, costume and direct engagement with the audience, Supové transforms the piano recital into performance art. The program will feature selections from the "Digital Debussy Project," in which contemporary composers fashion new works in response to works of the French master.

Suzanne Vromen, professor emeritus of sociology at Bard College, will give this talk on hiding Jewish children during the Holocaust. Vromen is the author of Hidden Children of the Holocaust: Belgian Nuns and their Daring Rescue of Young Jews from the Nazis. This event is co-sponsored by New College Judaic Studies and Gender Studies. Refreshments will be served.

Sarasota County and New College of Florida present the Sarasota Oral History Project reception and viewing. Enjoy stunning photographs and wonderful stories from people who lived through the good and sometimes not so good times on the Gulf Coast. Those interviewed for the project include Lorraine Rife, Richard Braren, Peter Stultz, New College alum and Assistant to the VP of Finance Jono Miller and Herman Johnson, who provides maintenance support for the New College Fitness Center. Meet and mingle with the interviewees, the student interviewers and your fellow water heritage fans. An outdoor reception will follow this free event.
