New Topics New College presents "Why Chipotle Wins! The Changing Face of Value for the New Consumer." New College alumnus Jonathan Smiga has a knack for anticipating health-conscious consumer trends in food. His career has taken him to senior positions with the Culinary Institute of America, Darden Restaurants and Orlando-based Barnie's Coffee and Tea Co., where as CEO he is remaking the Barnie's brand and the coffee shop experience. Smiga will let us peek behind the counter of the multi-billion dollar food and beverage industry and share what we can expect to see in the future.

Jordan Rosenblum, author of Food and Identity in Early Rabbinic Judaism, is the guest speaker. This annual Judaic Studies Lecture is sponsored by the Klingenstein Chair of Judaic Studies and the Jay Rudolph Endowment. The lecture series is named in honor of Selma and Paul Klingenstein, who helped establish the Klingenstein Chair in Judaic Studies at New College in 2001. While both Selma and Paul have since passed, the series serves as an enduring tribute to their commitment to New College.

Composer Randall Woolf will join pianist Kathleen Supové for a week-long residency at New College, during which both artists will work with New College student composers and will present a special program for students in the Sarasota County public schools. This artist conversation with Supové and Woolf is offered as part of New Music New College's free events for the community.

Kathleen Supové, one of today's finest contemporary pianists, returns to New College for the latest installment in her Exploding Piano series. Through electronic media, costume and direct engagement with the audience, Supové transforms the piano recital into performance art. The program will feature selections from the "Digital Debussy Project," in which contemporary composers fashion new works in response to works of the French master.

Hiding Jewish Children in Convents during the Holocaust

Suzanne Vromen, professor emeritus of sociology at Bard College, will give this talk on hiding Jewish children during the Holocaust. Vromen is the author of Hidden Children of the Holocaust: Belgian Nuns and their Daring Rescue of Young Jews from the Nazis. This event is co-sponsored by New College Judaic Studies and Gender Studies. Refreshments will be served.

The annual New College of Florida Juried Student Art Exhibition
features a selection of artwork including sculpture, painting,
drawing, and printmaking. This year 16 students are represented in
the exhibition, which is on view January 9 - March 2 in the New
College of Florida Isermann Gallery. A reception for the artists is
scheduled for Thursday, Feb 9, 6:30-8pm, with awards and a gallery
talk presented by this year's juror Kim Russo at 7pm. Russo is
department head of fine arts at Ringling College of Art and Design.
The event is free and open to the public.
