Baker and Snyder Appointed to New College Board of Trustees 

Baker SnyderBradford B. Baker of Venice, FL, and Steven L. Snyder of Sarasota, FL,  have been appointed to the Board of Trustees of New College of Florida, the state's honors college for the liberal arts and sciences. Announced by Florida Governor Rick Scott, both are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate. Baker is the director of Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc., president of Nexus Biometrics Inc. and president of Bramar Housing Inc. Snyder is the developer and chief executive officer of RSP-USA Inc., a Sarasota real estate marketing business.

New College Foundation Names Board Chair and New Trustees  

Isermann New College Foundation, Inc. has announced that Howard P. Isermann has been made Chair of its Board of Trustees. Isermann, who has served on the Foundation Board since 1998, takes over from Bradford Baker. A chemical engineer, Isermann is known for developing the ultraviolet absorber at Van Dyk & Co. that became the most effective and leading sunscreen in the world.

Joining the New College Foundation Board of Trustees for the first time are New College alums Jonathan Smiga '75, Thomas M. White '67, and Robert Lincoln '76. Smiga is currently a Partner and President/CEO of Barnie's CoffeeKitchen, based in Orlando, Florida, where he is remaking the Barnie's brand and the consumer's coffee shop experience. Thomas White is an attorney in Chicago specializing in the development, documentation and administration of executive compensation programs and employee benefit plans, including pension, profit sharing, 401 (k) and ESOP plans, and health and welfare benefit programs. Robert Lincoln is an attorney in Sarasota, representing public and private clients in all aspects of the land development process, with a focus on complex land use and zoning approvals and litigation.

Optical Spectroscopy & Nano-Materials Lab Opening

Heiser imageThe Optical Spectroscopy and Nano-Materials Lab at New College of Florida opens on January 6, 2012. New College professors Mariana Sendova, Pat McDonald and Steve Shipman will give presentations in physical science, math and chemistry beginning at 5:30 pm. New Topics New College presents "Why Chipotle Wins! The Changing Face of Value for the New Consumer." New College alumnus Jonathan Smiga has a knack for anticipating health-conscious consumer trends in food. His career has taken him to senior positions with the Culinary Institute of America, Darden Restaurants and Orlando-based Barnie's Coffee and Tea Co., where as CEO he is remaking the Barnie's brand and the coffee shop experience. Smiga will let us peek behind the counter of the multi-billion dollar food and beverage industry and share what we can expect to see in the future. 

Klingenstein Lecture, "Jewish Foodways: Ancient and Modern"

Jordan Rosenblum, author of Food and Identity in Early Rabbinic Judaism, is the guest speaker. This annual Judaic Studies Lecture is sponsored by the Klingenstein Chair of Judaic Studies and the Jay Rudolph Endowment. The lecture series is named in honor of Selma and Paul Klingenstein, who helped establish the Klingenstein Chair in Judaic Studies at New College in 2001. While both Selma and Paul have since passed, the series serves as an enduring tribute to their commitment to New College.
