Greetings!

Welcome to our first New College Promise E-Newsletter. We have plenty of news to share with you, our New College friends. Our hope is to keep you informed on good news happening with our New College family, campus and alumni events, and updates on our fundraising initiatives. Most of all, we want to give you a monthly peek into the lives of our New College students, faculty and alums by sharing their exciting accomplishments.

We have recently embarked on a $60 million campaign to raise necessary funds to maintain new College's continuing place at the forefront of undergraduate education in the 21st century.   As a promise to the next generation of New College scholars, our campaign is aptly called "The New College Promise."

The campaign will:

  • Substantially increase student scholarships, especially for minority and other under-represented kinds of students
  • Triple the College's privately funded endowment via outright and planned gifts
  • Double the number of endowed faculty positions
  • Substantially increase funds available for faculty and student research and travel
  • Complete funding for the planned International Studies Building and other campus building projects
  • Launch an endowment and expand research and reference collections of the Jane Bancroft Cook Library

Felice Schulaner ('78) serves as Campaign Chair, in addition to her duties as a member of the Foundation Board and New College Board of Trustees. Felice will lead the way by making a seven figure commitment to this historic endeavor. Senator Bob Johnson, a supporter of New College for decades, is Vice-Chair of the campaign.

Campaign Update

We are happy to report that in our first year, the campaign has raised $15 million from friends like you who are committed to helping us continue to attract the best and the brightest students and faculty. A few highlights:

  • The plaza outside the new Academic Center has been named The Robert and Beverly Koski Academic Plaza. Sarasota philanthropist Beverly Koski made a $1 million gift toward the College endowment. A bell tower will also be constructed later this year on the plaza.
  • Keith and Linda Monda have made a $600,000 gift for New College scholarships. It will be used to endow scholarships for out-of-state, need-based students. The Monda's gift will be matched 70% by the State of Florida, bringing its total value to $1,020,000. Keith Monda is a member of the New College Board of Trustees and is the former president and chief operating officer of Coach, Inc. in New York.
  • The Harry Sudakoff Foundation has awarded New College the final installment of a multi-year commitment totaling $500,000 for the design and construction of an academic facility to house International Studies. The grant is eligible for $500,000 in state matching funds.

Put on your dancing shoes for our New College Gala honoring retiring New College President, Dr. Mike Michalson who will be stepping down in June after eleven years as President. Please join us February 11, 2012 at The Fete Ballroom at Polo Grill in Lakewood Ranch.

During his tenure, New College became an independent member of the State University System and one of the most highly ranked public undergraduate schools in the nation. The "Dr. Mike years" have been marked by substantial growth of the student body and a major investment in new academic facilities, including two state-of-the-art science buildings, five "green" dormitories, a Public Archaeology Lab, Black Box Theatre, and most recently, the new, as-yet unnamed Academic Center.

We thank Dr. Mike for the outstanding educational legacy he has created, keeping New College at the forefront of higher education. For more information and sponsorship levels, please contact Johnette Cappadona, Director of Special Events, at [email protected] or 941-487-4600.

The gala coincides with a New College Alum reunion for the weekend of February 10-12, 2012 here in Sarasota. For more information on the weekend's festivities, please contact Sarah Thompson, Alum Coordinator at [email protected] or 941-487-4676.

Students to Watch

Talk to 4th year student, Kathleen McQueeney and within 10 seconds, she's exuberantly explaining monetary macro economics including bank liquidity, commodity prices, and federal reserve policies. The Boynton Beach native recently traveled to Stockholm to attend the Global Interdependence Center conference, Capital Markets in the Post Crisis Environment: A Case of Past and Present Financial Crises. Kathleen was invited by David Kotok, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Cumberland Advisors, a firm new to the Sarasota area. As a supporter of New College, David generously donated Kathleen's travel expenses. A grant from the New College Foundation covered her conference attendance fees.

Kathleen was able to meet with experts in the field of economics and discuss her thesis topic on excess reserves. She was particularly excited to meet Eric Rosengren, head of the Federal Reserve in Boston and Brandeis Professor, Catherin Mann, an advisor at the Federal Reserve in Boston and New York. "They said my research is very topical and something being talked about at the Fed all the time," she exclaimed. It was an experience she will never forget. "Being in the presence of such impressive people was amazing because I was constantly able to ask questions about economics, which is not something I have the opportunity to do everyday!"

Kathleen's faculty advisor, Economics Professor Tarron Khemraj nominated her for the trip. "It reminded me why I came to New College, to build relationships that can lead to opportunities," she said.

After graduation, Kathleen hopes to receive a Fulbright scholarship for a Masters in International Economics at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. She extends her thanks to David Kotok and the New College Foundation. "This was a once in a lifetime opportunity," she says. "My parents and I were over the moon!"
